Yacht Country Recordings on SoundBetter

Yacht Country specializes in making budget home recordings sound like they were recorded in high end studios and making high end studio recordings sound creative and personal.

John Eric Hetherington began his career in music as a guitarist, bassist and songwriter and became fascinated in mixing and audio engineering while looking over the shoulders of the producers who were recording his own bands. With over a decade of mixing experience ranging from DIY / Self recorded productions as well as full studio productions, he is able to transform recordings from any budget level into inspired, professional mixes. He has produced and mixed music of many genres, including songs that have been featured on major TV shows such as Shameless (Showtime), New Girl (Fox), The Fosters (ABC Family), Pretty Little Liars (ABC Family) and more.

Interview with Yacht Country Recordings

  1. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  2. A: I am good at taking a song recorded at any budget and turning it into a cohesive and creative mix with a lot of variation and excitement moment-to-moment.

  3. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  4. A: Mixing

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: This changes often but I am currently into 70's country and and rock (things like Willy, Waylon, Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, ELO, ect) as well as 90's Shoegaze bands like Slowdive and Catherine Wheel. The players and production on those albums are outstanding. I am also loving all of the latest releases by the Thundercat / Kamasi Washington / Terrace Martin crew of jazz musicians, Frank Ocean, Lil Ugly Mane, Blood Orange, Wild Nothing, Mk.Gee, Chris Stapleton, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and The War On Drugs. Thee Oh Sees, Mac DeMarco, Gizzard, etc.

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: Indie rock, psychedelic, electronic, synth.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: Work on going off the grid in editing (especially drums). Even in electronic music you can build very cool grooves by just moving away from the grid.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: Tube and transformer outboard front end into Pro Tools. Hybrid mixing setup using the best plugins into an outboard analog mix bus.
