Matt Hines on SoundBetter

Welcome! From the initial spark of creativity until the song reaches the masses, I am here to help you fully realize your vision exactly the way you imagined it. My intent with every song is to make something that will live on forever and touch millions of lives! I've performed with Jonas Brothers, Bazzi, Kiana Lede, Ledisi, etc.

My biggest weapon is my versatility.

I can produce in many styles including Trap, R&B, Pop, Alternative R&B, Hip Hop, & EDM amongst others. One of my signatures is my ability to modernize the use of live instruments and analog synths in a way that is relevant to our time period, yet sonically unique. I also love to use the most progressive 808s, Synths, and Drums that I can come up with. You could say I have one foot in the mid-20th century and the other foot in the future.

My value is increased by my ability to engineer the recording sessions, vocal produce, and do all of the post production (tuning, comping, editing, etc.) that the song will need. I have my B.A. in Music Production & Engineering from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. I can take your song all the way from the moment inspiration strikes until the final mix.

I am also available for Electric Bass and Synth Bass Session work. I've played on some of your favorite artists' records including Summer Walker.

Let's make the world better together one song at a time!

Matt is the real deal. He saw the vision in my track and took it to the next level! Matt is extremely talented, prompt, and personable. Right out of the gate, we had great communication and understanding of where we wanted to take the track. It's rare to find a producer that sees your vision for a song but Matt did just that and then some. I will definitely use Matt again in the future and highly recommend working with him. You won't be disappointed!

Interview with Matt Hines

  1. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  2. A: I want to work with all the greats period. Too many to name, but more importantly I want to build and develop some of the next superstars that the world is waiting for. All of my favorite producers have broken several artists. I want that to be apart of my legacy. Also breaking an artist often adds longevity to your career.

  3. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  4. A: I am inspired by Mike Dean & Travis Scott's sonic progressiveness. I am inspired by the musicality, yet simplicity of the Motown Era. I am inspired by Boi1da's drums. Drake's melodic mastery is very inspiring to me. The feeling a Jodeci record gives me everytime it comes on inspires me. Kevin Parker of Tame Impala is one of my biggest inspirations ever.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I started producing at 12. I saw the music video for "Pop Lock & Drop it" by Huey (yes, random I know lol) and decided I wanted to make music. I started playing bass when I was 15. I went to Berklee College of Music in Boston where I received a degree in Music Production & Engineering. I moved to Los Angeles from my hometown of Chicago in Spring 2017.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. Digital is faster, but analog gear sounds more warm & classic. It has a heart and a certain nostalgia that I believe people can feel. I'm about things being both efficient and classic. It's about knowing which aspects of both worlds are important and work well together.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: You will love the record. I will make sure the record comes out the way you imagined it if not better!

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Everything! I do music for a living. It's a huge blessing. So many people wish to do this & it's become my reality. I'm very thankful.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: Producers and beat makers are not the same thing. Thousands of people can make a hot beat these days, its fairly easy. Not nearly as many can take that beat and make sure it becomes a great song, guide an artist's vision, and help them get that magical vocal performance in the studio. Of course making a great beat is very important too, but that is only half the battle.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: I'm versatile I have several styles. Urban Crossover. Rock-Influenced Rap. Alternative R&B. & What I like to call Analog Trap.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: My thing is really Urban music, but with alot of Pop sensibilities and structure. I make universal music. I want people of all races, religions, nationalities, etc. to be singing and dancing to my records.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: My strongest skill is my ability to judge my own work objectively. I do not let the emotions attached to the music get in the way of making the song the best it can be, even if that means taking out an element that I love or starting over completely.

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: Great idea to start with. Creative Engineering & Sound Design. Hard Hitting Drums (where appropriate). An honest ear. A variety of influences across almost every genre. Musicianship. Great Taste.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: My process can be anything. It can be me recording a drum loop with live drums, a bass line, an 808 pattern, a melody, ANYTHING. Whatever angle inspiration decides to present itself is the one I take.

  25. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  26. A: Macbook. Apogee Duet. Mic. Bass. Guitar.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: My studio setup is a hybrid setup. I have mics setup to record whatever instruments I feel inspired to record efficiently through my Apogee Duet. I usually produce in Ableton and cut vocals in Protools. I have some live drum elements, basses, analog synths, percussion, guitars, guitar amps, etc & of course some really loud speakers!
