Alexander Luebbe on SoundBetter

I help rock and indie bands to reach their desired sonic vision by providing modern “in your face” productions that stay true to authenticity and roughness.

I have spent my entire life making music and learning how to perpetuate it as good as possible.
My mission is to share my creativity and professional know how with talented musicians.

I've known Alex for the better part of a decade now and it has always been an absolute pleasure working with him. Incredible workflow with a goal driven attitude, while always remaining a humorous, friendly and respectful atmosphere. Alex recorded, mixed and mastered my bands first studio album, of wich the level of quality never ceases to amaze me. I would highly recommend working with him to anyone who is looking to get the best out of their music productions.

Alex has mixed and mastered my first album. He has been a great help to me every step of the way. Alex is extremely kind and patient while professional at the same time. He took his time to grasp the sound that I imagine and then brought my records to the next level. I would recommend Alex' high quality mixing and mastering services to anyone.

The last EP "Sorry" by NORDN was created in collaboration with Alex. We really enjoyed the time in the studio. Working with him give us the opportunity to refine our sound. And we love it. Alex totally understands what we want and he is able to sensitively bring in new ideas.

I'm working over 3 years with this guy. Every single I released was mixed by Alex. He's professional and really patient. I would definitely recommend him if you're looking for a beautiful mix. :)

Interview with Alexander Luebbe

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I am very proud of the album "So We Can Play With Fire" that i've produced and mixed with Easy Shapes. It was the first long time Project i have been doing and it's a perfect reflection of what i love in music. When i was a teenager i used to listen a lot to pop rock and indie music, so it was also kind of like a dream come true for my younger self to be part of a project like that.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Both. People need to stop thinking of two separate worlds. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, so why not combine their strengths?

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: You are going to love the outcome of this project. More than you can imagine before the whole process.

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: I think most people underestimate the process after the song writing and recording. The creative production and mixing work on a song is a huge part and takes a lot of time and energy.

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: What is your vision? What is your inspiration? How would you describe your music visually? What is your goal in music, what do you want to achieve with this project?

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: Talk to people. Don't decide on a provider because his gear looks awesome. Take a look at the work that he has done (no matter how successful it is) and start a conversation. Explain what your plans are as a musician and see if he can bring you forward.

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: Macbook, Small Diaphragm mic, Interface, Guitar, Headphones.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: I think my style is pretty modern but i always make sure to not make it sound to digital or "chewing gum". I love saturation. I would also consider myself as a sound designer. I love to put little special treats in songs that you'd only hear once in a song. If you wanna hear it again, repeat the song.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: I would probably love to work with Matthew Healy from The 1975 because he's a great artist and doesn't care about boundries in music and art.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Music production doesn't need rules. If it sounds good to you, you're on the right track.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: I do everything from pop over electronic music to indie and rock music. I also love to work with heavy music.

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: I guess that would be finding the sweet spot between making something unique while keeping the character and the visions of the artist.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: I always begin with getting to know to the artist. Producing music is something very personal, so i can not imagine doing that without knowing the artist like a friend. It also makes communication a lot easier.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: I try to combine the best of the digital world with the analogue world. I also like to limit myself in what gear i am working with, because that makes me creative. Nevertheless, a lot of microphones have accumulated over the years. In my own studio I have a separate vocal booth. I have a basic guitar and synthesizer setup, a Hammond organ, a very nice Summit Audio Preamp and a collection of percussions.

  29. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  30. A: My inspirations are always changing. I think there are many visionaries and many "doers" out there. But the art of making it in the music industry is to combine the two worlds in the best possible way.

  31. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  32. A: Most of the time I accompany artists starting with the writing process, producing the songs, and take care of mixing and mastering them in the end. If desired i also help the artists with distribution, sales and marketing.
