I've had the pleasure of working with Nich a handful of times over the past year. He is a very knowledgeable engineer/producer who has completed excellent work on my tracks across the board. He does a great job in taking direction, while also delivering in a timely fashion. I would certainly recommend Nich for any project!

Interview with Nich "S!lky" Jones

  1. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  2. A: I would give so much just to work with Lido for one day. He has been an inspiration for me in every aspect of music and is my favorite producer/artist.

  3. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  4. A: I bring my professional experience as a producer and engineer in multiple realms and backgrounds of the industry from modern (electronic/hip-hop) to classic (rock/country) techniques. For example, in Nashville I learned classic and analog approaches to mixing while working with Clarke and producers Scott Hendricks and Paul Worley. There I aided in the recording process on Blake Shelton's "Texoma Shore".

  5. Q: What's your typical work process?

  6. A: For mixing/mastering: I use ProTools mainly. I focus on making each sound clean with a great space, blending them with summing and saturation, and use multiple sub mixes to build more dynamic contrast, width, and depth in the mix. For recording: I use Pro Tools 2018 with an option from multiple condenser and ribbon microphones, and in-series processing (light compression/eq). For production: I currently use Maschine 2.0 but am beginning to work in Ableton 9 & 10.

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: I usually am working on electronic and hip-hop music. I have had the recent pleasure of working with S4M.SCøTT on his recent "The Night Before" EP.

  9. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  10. A: Lido, Diplo & Skrillex, Brasstracks/Ivan Jackson, Jon Bellion, Chance The Rapper, and engineers like Luca Pretolesi, Chris Gehringer, Manny Marroquin, Nathan Boddy, and others.

  11. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  12. A: Both. Digital has so many different options and ways to work that you cannot do in analog, but analog has the unique sound you want.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: Some remote mixers like to spend an hour or two on a mix and call it a day. I do not. I will work on a song until it's perfect to both me and the artist. Whether that is 5 hours or 5 days.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What are you looking for out of your song? What kind of vibe? Who do you draw inspiration from?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Give them a shot. It's scary to hire some remotely and not know them, but in the end you may have hit the jackpot and with sites like Soundbetter, you're guaranteed to not regret your decision.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: My most common type of work I do is mixing and mastering for clients.
