Ilya Lukashev Studio on SoundBetter

Experienced Mixing Engineer with personal approach, great skill and state of the art gear. Work for top artists and labels. Located in Los Angeles

I keep my eye (and ears) on the essence of your track. Mix with top notch skills and gear for the last 10 years. Honest, bio degradable. My objectives are dynamics, emotions, and a good portion of detail. Worked with a large variety of projects from simple singer/songwriter kind of music to lots of rock, jazz, complicated modern productions, Movie Music Mixing, orchestral sessions, iTunes Live EP sessions etc.. My main objective is providing a good sounding mix on schedule, still keeping it sounding big, wide and "alive" achieving the most musical and pro sounding result.

Would love to hear from you. Click the contact button above to get in touch.

Ilya mixed and mastered two of my songs, which included orchestras and vocals. I am very satisfied with his work. He was extremely precise and attentive to detail. He was very available and I am certain that I would like to work with him again in the future.

We worked with Ilya on the song Karelian Sunrise.
This was our first experience with a sound engineer of this level!
My personal impressions as a soloist are only positive!
Ilya approaches the mix from the position of the Creator. It is felt that for him this is not only a technical side, but also a creative one. I liked the approach, communication, discussion of the mix and the end result!
All who listen to our single, note the gorgeous sound of the song!

Thanks! I hope we will work together again in the future!
    Ilya, remember!

Only six months ago we had a blast working with Ilia on our song. He recorded and then mixed it. At first I was afraid that recording process might be a bit challenging, because it was the first time that we decided to record a song with one take. But Ilia made that session one of the most wonderful experiences that we had with his amazing skills (people and engineering)) Honestly, now I just cannot imagine a better person for this job.
And then mixing. His level of patience and attention to every detail is beyond imaginable. Ilia is a truly wonderful professional with his unique musical vew

An amazing sound engineer and a great person to work with. Creative, enthusiastic, willing to go beyond the common decisions and techniques. A great collaborator, professional and supportive with tons of ideas. Has recorded and mixed complex tracks for me - live orchestra, guitars, drums and percussion, tons of fx, synths etc. Highly recommended!

Interview with Ilya Lukashev Studio

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I really love track called Container by Therr Maitz we used to mix few yars back. Love i because it's unusual in terms of sound. It pushed me into digging sounds I don't usually create but it was interesting.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Three different albums - indie ethnic/hip hop by a well known artist here, rock album, jazz record and about 10 various singles and EPs

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Sure there are lots of great engineers and musicians here. I recommend SB all the time for the last few years

  7. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  8. A: I really love track called Container by Therr Maitz I mixed few years back. Love i because it's unusual in terms of sound. It pushed me into digging sounds I don't usually create but it was interesting. The other one is Luminescence by Amber Sept. It was interesting to compete with a great engineer who mixed some other tracks on that record.

  9. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  10. A: Three different albums - indie ethnic/hip hop by a well known artist here, rock album, jazz record and about 10 various singles and EPs

  11. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  12. A: Sure there are lots of great engineers and musicians here. I recommend SB all the time for the last few years

  13. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  14. A: Both. Cause both works and both have the beauty of it's own.

  15. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  16. A: I'm crazy about doing my job on time so I promise to provide the best mix I can on time.

  17. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  18. A: That it's my job, hobby and the main thing in my life at the same time.

  19. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  20. A: What's you 2Buss Chain?) Ut's usually a Manley Massive Passive Mastering into Vari Mu Mastering Version into rnd mbp II and a few other top pieces.

  21. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  22. A: That mixing is a set of rules and could be done in a few hours by any guy with a DAW

  23. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  24. A: What do you want for that exact song? If you have your mix - what you like and what you don't like in it? Tell m as much as possible about your track. And I don't mean technical stuff here - let me know who you wrote it for? Why? What's the story behind it

  25. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  26. A: Remember, it's a common job. The artist and the engineer wor together to achieve great result. If there's only one side interested - you won't get there.

  27. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  28. A: My amphion speakers, a nice da converter, avid s6, my vintage u47 and chandler tg pre.

  29. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  30. A: I've been doing this since high school when I first go into a great analog studio and realized that music production is going to be the thing of my life. Now I'm in my early thirties and I never felt like I've made a wrong decision. I used to work as a studio assistant, then became house engineer at one of top notch facilities here in Moscow. For the last 5 years I work on my own in my personal studio facility with several setups and a nice variety of instruments. Of course, my professional life changed since I had a chance to learn from Michael Brauer and Joe Chiccarelli in person. These guys inspired me a lot and made me believe more in what I'm doing. So everything is great and mixing is my "day job" and the love of my life at the same time.

  31. Q: How would you describe your style?

  32. A: Accurate and dynamic at the same time

  33. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  34. A: Both. Cause both works and both have the beauty of it's own.

  35. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  36. A: I'm crazy about doing my job on time so I promise to provide the best mix I can on time.

  37. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  38. A: Keep the right tempo, don't overproduce.

  39. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  40. A: Various, mostly live. Sometimes edm

  41. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  42. A: Bringing the essence of a track on top.

  43. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  44. A: First of all I ask if artist needs to bring something into the music. If not - I just mix. If he/she is open for some creative mojo - I'd do my best to help the song work emotionally. It might be some undertracking, automation or crazy event fx. It always depends.

  45. Q: What's your typical work process?

  46. A: I have an assistant who prepares the session layout does all the colorcoding and fixes occasional artifacts in RX. Then I mix. Usually we have from zero to 3-4 fixes and we're done. That's it basically. I never charge for fixes.

  47. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  48. A: That's a hybrid room powered by a top notch mac pro. Apollo X16 conversion goes into a custom built german Summing mixer. Master section is usually a manley massive passive mastering, Vari - Mu mastering, RED3, TK Audio BC1-THD and a Rupert Neve Master Buss Processor. I do have some outboard gear including vintage wsw eqs, retro 176, adr compex and vocal stressor, some chandlers etc. Bricasti M7 of course. But who cares about gear?

  49. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  50. A: Bob Clearmountain, Michael Brauer, Tom Elmhirst, Joe Chiccarelli

  51. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  52. A: I mostly mix music of various genre from cinematic scores to powerful rock stuff. Sometimes doing jazz, sometimes Indie. Well mixing almost everything except for the metal music.
