Dina Maccabee on SoundBetter

I am a versatile and highly experienced violinist, violist, and arranger. Whether you need orchestral pads or a fiddle solo, I will bring depth and sparkle to your tracks, and professionalism to your session!

I specialize in both traditional and improvisational approaches to viola and violin, and creative arranging and songwriting. I add depth, space, and complexity to my performances and compositions using electronic processing, looping, and effects.

With 15 years of experience in performing and recording, I come prepared to get the most out of every session. In addition to multi-tracking violin and viola, as well as improvising solos, I also provide high-quality string arrangements and error-free scores.

In 2015-2016 I was the violist/backup vocalist for international tours with respected songwriter and composer Julia Holter, and I have also toured extensively since 2003 with Carla Bozulich, Vienna Teng, Ramon & Jessica, Beth Custer, and Real Vocal String Quartet.

Dina is an incredible violinist / violist. Strings can be tricky to record and stakes feel very high during string sessions. However, Dina is incredibly calm, patient and professional. She listens intently and is very thoughtful with her compositions. She is wonderful to work with - I highly recommend her!

Dina is one of the most talented musicians I've ever had the pleasure of working with in the studio. She's a great listener, performer, singer, and composer arranger. She just gets music.

I've seen projects where Dina is the primary composer and performer. And I've seen her play in countless other bands over the years. She's always a pro, and makes the band better. Even when I see her perform her own compositions, making thoughtful decisions on what makes the best music are prioritized over making it about the performer. It's refreshing.

Dina is highly professional and a great player. She excels in both interpreting composed music and creative improvisation. I cannot recommend her enough-- for any string session.

Interview with Dina Maccabee

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: Creating the illusion of a string "section" takes time. Even if you are hiring a single player to do overdubs, plan for a whole day to cover 4 tracks, not more.

  3. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  4. A: Listen to music you like and get a sense of what role the string section is playing. Is it adding texture and depth, or emulating a certain style like Bollywood or Motown? If you know you want a specific melody to be played on violin, take the time to write it down or hire someone to make a score. This saves so much time in the studio! When doing overdubs, make sure to organize your session so that you can easily start at the section where the string parts enter, and take care to route your session so that the performers can request a specific balance of parts in their headphone mix. A good headphone mix is crucial for string players to achieve rhythmic accuracy and good intonation.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I have been playing and recording professionally since 2002.

  7. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  8. A: I am most often hired to supplement "basic" tracks with solo strings and string arrangements. This can mean reading parts composed in advance, or simply listening in the studio and coming up with parts on the spot to fit the vibe of the tracks. I am often called upon to multitrack several violin and viola parts to create the sound of a string or orchestral "section."
