I Mix Your Live Recordings!

Maik Styrnol on SoundBetter

Live Concert Mixing! Let me create a sound with more energy than any of your studio records can ever have! With my Live Concert Series "WeLive" I won several awards and received countless positive reviews for the sound (and video) quality!

Hi there, I'm Maik Styrnol, and I'm the Mixing and Mastering Engineer behind the video and audio production company "punchline studio". I have a deep passion for live music, and I specialize in bringing that energy to your recordings!

Over the years, I Mixed and Mastered Trailers for Uriah Heap, Wishbone Ash and Nazareth, got the chance to work with Deep Purple and finally went back into working with more regional bands during Covid: Since then I'm producing the award winning live concert series "WeLive", where I get to work with fantastic bands in all kinds of genres.

As a live music specialist, I understand the unique challenges of working with the usual problems of live recordings, weather it be suboptimal Mic placement, too much ambience or the occasional off-pitch notes... I love these challenges, I'm here for all of it, and cannot wait to work on your songs!

Whether you're a solo artist or a funk band with backing choir, my goal is to help you take your music to the next level. I work closely with my clients to understand their goals and bring their music to life, creating tracks that are polished, yet powerful and true to the energy and excitement of live music.

So if you're looking for a Mixing Engineer who understands the power of live music, I'd be honored to work with you.

Send me an email through 'Contact' button above and I'll get back to you asap.

Interview with Maik Styrnol

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: That I'm just dude mixing your songs. I mean, I am that, but for some time I become your newest band member who wants to create something special with you.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: About 10 years of craziness. From Jazz Guitarist to Film Composer to Radio Composer to Film Composer to Audio Engineer to Film Producer to Film and Audio Producer to Mixing Engineer and Music Video Producer.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: I produce a concert film festival: https:// www.welive-festival.com

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. But Analog is so much more fun.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I'll listen to you, not just to your music!

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Getting to know so many great artists and creating something with them.

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Tell me everything that you have on your mind! Things that you want, things that you definitely don't want! I'm your tool, so use me. I'm happy to give a lot of ideas, but it all starts with you!

  15. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  16. A: My coffee machine and 4 guitars. You can never have enough guitars!

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: Honest. Once I have the feeling for the artist and the music I double down on it and don't put a lot of gloss over everything.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: Singer-Songwriter, Rock, Folk, Blues, Funk

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: Life, and whatever you ask me for. ;-)

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: I have a small (48m2) project studio for my own producing and composing. In there I have a concert grand, some guitars, a lot of microphones and my mixing desk with some ourboard gear. I mix with Genelec speakers because I work quite often with broadcasting and in Germany they are basically the standard in most radio and TV stations. My Setup: iMac, ProTools, SSL 500-Series UltraViolet EQ, Trident Audio 80B-500 EQ, SSL 500-Series 611 DYN, Warm Audio WA76, Warm Audio EQP-WA, dbx 266xs, IGS Audio S-Type 500 VU My Mics: Sennheiser, Oktava, Neumann, Røde, Avantone... and the most comfy couch in the business!

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: I Mix and Master Live Recordings, which also includes Editing, Tuning and Re-Amping quite often.

  27. Q: What's your typical work process?

  28. A: Since I work with a lot of live recordings I usually have a really good idea of how the band wants to sound and the energy they transport. So I just double down on that and take their energy to a new level.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: Listening. Not only to music, but also to the vision of the other people involved.
