Dennis Koehne on SoundBetter

Mixing / Mastering engineer mostly for heavy stuff. I worked with SODOM, EXUMER, ORDEN OGAN

I´m a self-employed audio engineer / producer and I've worked in the renowned "Woodhouse Studios" (Hagen, Germany) for many years before. I´m in professional audio business since 2001.
My specialities are rock, pop, punk and metal productions, but I´m open minded for almost any kind of music,
and have worked with many clients of different genres over the years.

I´m a new generation engineer, working almost completely itb these days, but I worked on analog desks and tape machines some years ago, so I know their sound and behavior.

I had the please of getting my album mixed and mastered by Dennis. The results surpassed my expectations by a great margin.

Long story short: He is the living personification of all the good things you've heard about German working ethics, but, he as also a good sense of humor.

when I first published the job for remixing a 20+ year old single I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of proposals I received, so I had to start splitting hairs in order to reach a decision.
Finally, I've ended up chosing Dennis. Right in his first proposal it was clear he had indeed listened to the reference tracks and even asked for the stems to check what can be achieved. This dedication to details was constant throught the project. The end result exceeded my expectations.

Dennis was flawless from start to finish of the mastering process. He made everything run smoothly and understood all our needs very well.

It was a quick and efficient job, easy, not tiring, we are very happy with the result!

We will count on him in future works, that's for sure.

Thanks Dennis and we'll be back soon,

Working with Dennis is really easy, and the results are spectacular...
Quick response and great advice. He's someone who really knows what he's doing!
He mastered a song for us that took away any doubts that we would want to master the album with him.
    Strongly recommended!
For future projects/albums, you will certainly be the first person to contact.

It‘s been a real pleasure working with Dennis as a mixing and mastering engineer for our second full length album (melodic metal with some progressive and symphonic elements).
As stated in previous reviews, Dennis went through all tracks for one song and gave feedback. Dennis then mixed one song before we decided to make the whole album based on that mix, that we were really satisfied with!
I highly recommend working with Dennis and have only good words to say about him.

Before I even accepted the proposal, Dennis went through all my tracks, asked detailed questions, and gave me some very precise feedback. I was then pretty sure Dennis was going to do a good job for me. But what he delivered was WAY beyond what I could have hoped for - the sound was absolutely fantastic. I can recommend Dennis without a shadow of a doubt. Thanks Dennis for a GREAT mix!

Dennis was absolutely wonderful to work with. I had a pretty long and detailed track that needed mixing, and he took on the job with such professionalism, sensitivity and enthusiasm, and the results are stellar. I really appreciated how he took extra care to do each section of the song justice, and his musicality and intuition is not something you'll find anywhere. I expected a lot from such an experienced pro, and he exceeded my expectations! Will absolutely work with him again :)

Like many people I was apprehensive about using and engineer in another country ..... if you are thinking this don't !! Dennis mastered my bands EP and it sounds awsome!!, He is really easy to work with, quick at responding and most importantly has a great sound. From the get go Dennis gave me feedback about what would work best, tweaks to mixes to get the best sound for the overall master. I will defiantly use Dennis again and you should as well

Amazing guy, friend and colleague. In the last years we worked on several projects together. Dennis is fast, reliable, extremely competent, focussed, stays in a good mood and always get's the job done, no matter how difficult (or late...) it gets.
He's good in all genres, but excels in pop / rock / alternative / punk for mixing and mastering.
    Absolute recommendation.

Interview with Dennis Koehne

  1. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  2. A: I will try to make it sound professionaI and punchy. I will shape it in a way it will sound competitive, and I will try to bring out details and maybe add nice little effects. The emotion of a song is very important to me. I can completely exchange drumounds (bassdrum, snare, toms), if they are not well recordet, or played poorly.

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: For mixing: Turn a bad song (or a badly produced one) into a good one. It will still be bad with better sound. I can´t repair all kinds of flaws which happened in the recording. Some things are fixable, some not. For mastering: I can´t fix stuff that obviously went wrong during the mixing or recording process.I for example can´t really turn down a hihat track seperately in the mastering stage... I always have to treat the track as a whole.

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: There are alot. Too many to list them all. :)

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: In most cases, my work sounds more expensive than it is. That´s what other clients told me.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: Don´t be afraid to do things which might not be so common. Be creative. Some very pragmatic tips: Always record DI tracks for guitars and bass, alongside any miced amp setups. Do any drumediting duties before recording the rest of the tracks. Always record a pair of stereo drum room mics, no matter how bad the room sounds.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Mostly heavier style rock, metal & punk music. In general every kind of music with distorted electric guitars & real drums.

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: Mixing and mastering, but also editing and recording.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: I´m working at home. I have a small but efficient setup with Cubase, Wavelab and a ton of plug ins, RME Fireface UFX & Genelec 1030A + Sub. There´s some outboard gear also, but I hardly use it. :)

  17. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  18. A: "Can you handle our kind of music?" - Probably yes, if you can tell me what it´s about. "Is it well enough recorded?" - I have to hear the single tracks, if there´s anything bad, I will tell you. "We recorded ourselves in the rehersal room, is that okay?" - Depends on the room and your skills and equipment. I mixed a lot of records, which have been recordet this way, and they sound great, I think :)

  19. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  20. A: I recorded, mixed and mastered an album for some good friends of mine, called SPIN MY FATE. The whole process took about a year of time. We tried a lot of things out, and just had a good time. The album sounds killer, at least that´s what people say :)

  21. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  22. A: Mixing some stuff for a post-black metal band.

  23. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  24. A: I´m working 95% digital these days. For me it is faster and more flexible. I did a lot of mixing with analog eqiupment some years ago, and I always felt a bit limited. Soundwise, digital stuff is getting better all the time, so the argument of "analog sounds better" is kind of out of the way for me.

  25. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  26. A: Being creative and in the best case, give a better result than the client expects.

  27. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  28. A: What kind of sound are you looking for? What is your background as a band or artist? What do you want to achive with this song/album? I mainly try to check out, in which direction the whole project should go soundwise.

  29. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  30. A: Make sure your tracks are prepared well. The better the material is produced, recorded and edited (if needed), the easier and faster your mix can be done. Don´t contact any serious mix engineer with a bunch of crappy, unsorted & bad sounding recordings. Provide a roughmix.

  31. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  32. A: Laptop with Cubase, electric guitar, Fireface UCX, Slate VMS, Headphones.

  33. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  34. A: I started working at Woodhouse Studios in 2001 as an assistent engineer, and I´m self employed since 2009.

  35. Q: How would you describe your style?

  36. A: Loud, modern & detailed. But not too much plastic. I personally don´t like if stuff is overedited.

  37. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  38. A: Any band which makes great music.

  39. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  40. A: I´m a musician myself, so I hear stuff in a musical way. I´m not afraid of doing things, that are not written in the "engineers handbook". So I break rules sometimes, to achieve certain things in sound.

  41. Q: What's your typical work process?

  42. A: Make a coffee, listen to the tracks, sort & gainstage them while listening. I do a quick leveling of all the tracks, then route them to subgroups. Then I usually start mixing the drums, then bass, guitars, vocals & keys.
