Interview with Unchained Mixing and Mastering
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I feel especially proud of a pro bono project I did recently for a pop singer who just got the opportunity to go and do some work with Disney. I was the studio lead and chief engineer for mixing and mastering :)
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Getting more clients because I love to do this.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not yet.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital because I can do pretty much everything analog can on a laptop, plus it's more portable.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That I will put my all into making your song the best it can be!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Spending hours getting to intimately know a piece of music and helping to shape that music into something great.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can you make X sound happen, 9 out of 10 it's a yes
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it's simple or Mystical XD
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Why they do music and how far they want to take it.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: If there is a specific sound you are looking for make sure to point them in that directing before they start the project. Also, don't be afraid to hire people who do not have oodles of Grammy awards under their belt, because sometimes the best at what they do are still undiscoverd.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A generator(preferably solar powered), My Laptop, My pro mixing headphones, A way to connect to the internet, and my wife Lol XD
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My career path has always been music in one way or another. Started as a Rapper in Highschool, Then a DJ hosting events and house parties eventually got picked up by a light club as their head DJ and Chief sound and lighting engineer. Later on, I started my own label while working as a radio DJ and Freelance audio engineer. Started Rapping again putting out music and doing shows, Trashed the label and spent months creating what I like to call the worlds first anti label. I love it instead of artists serving us we now serve them. Plus they keep all of their rights, royalties, and creative control
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: An Outsiders Professional
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with NF or Manafest because they have a sound that I can really vibe with and I would love to be a part of one of their songs.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always Make sure that your DAW Algorithms are set properly.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on Clean Hip-Hop, Faith Based Music, Singer-Songwriter, and Pop
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: A Willingness to try a crazy idea if I think it will put that song on the next level
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring an outside perspective plus years of experience as a sound engineer and DJ give me a different look on things we can do that will really make this song appealing, not only to the listeners but also to the ones who play the music.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: A Client sends me a request. We see if their style is in line with something we want to work with or not. We say yes, they send us the beat stems and the vox stems and any other important information. I like to mix the beat first so that I can really get a feel for the rhythm and make sure the song is in time, Plus this gives me the opportunity to carve out space for the vocals. I mix vocals doing any comp or edit work that needs to be done. Then I blend the beat and vocals together and add any finishing touches. Then I Master it and boom it's done.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I am a firm believer that it's not the gear that makes a Mix and Masters great it's the skills! That being said I do not use any out board or large analog mixing consuls to get a pro job done, this also helps me keep the prices to the client lower while not sacrificing quality.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am very inspired by the sounds and qualities of many electronic/instrumental artists and aspire to bring my own music up to the quality of people like 50Cent and NF
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The Most common type of work I do for my Clients is a full-service audio engineer and album producer. They come to me with a beat and lyrics and together we make the magic happen.
