Born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, I've always had a passion for music. I play electric guitar, bass and a little bit of piano, which is extremely useful when I'm producing, mixing and editing.

In 2009 I moved to LA to start the Audio Engineer Program at Los Angeles Recording School (LARS) where I graduated with honors and got my Pro Tools Certification.

Still in LA I worked at Wavaflow Studios where I got to record Matt Sorum (Guns N' Roses) and Mike Inez (Alice in Chains).

Back in Brazil I started working at NaCena Studios, a very large facility with three different studios where I had the opportunity to collaborate with some of the greatest artist from Brazil, including Caetano Veloso, Seu Jorge, Fafá de Belem, Chitãozinho e Xororó, Fabio Junior, etc.

From 2014 to the present I'm working at Estúdio El Rocha, a historic studio in São Paulo focused in independent music, from Rock, Pop, Hip Hop and Brazilian Music.

Interview with Éric Yoshino

Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been doing this for the last ten years and I tend to think I'll be doing this for the rest of my life while always trying to improve by studying and learning new techniques.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both have amazing benefits, the secret is to know when to use each.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Definitely Radiohead! Their work with different sounds, compositions, arrangements is incredible. But there should be a no-beatles policy attached to this question.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I'm really proud of Criolo's newest album called "Espiral de Ilusão". Criolo is known as a rap artist and decided to make a samba record. With no electrical instruments, we had to build the record sound with only a classic guitar, a cavaquinho and a lot of percussion.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I'll do my absolutely best to make you happy with the result.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Get to know new people, cultures and making great music people will relate to.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: SM57, Neumann U87A (not AI), UREI 1176 Rev. H, LA-2A and a espresso machine.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: The first thing is to get to know the project, listen to it very carefully and understand what have to be done. When recording, I need to get familiar with the song, check if the arrangement is ready, try to imagine the sound I'll go after. When mixing, I'll organize the session while listening to it and map the song's strengths and how I can improve it.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: How can I get you closer to your dream sound?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Let's do our best to have fun and make some great music!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I really like vintage sounds when applied to modern pop and rock music.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I have the privilege to work with a lot of people I admire. Most of them are listed above. But to list a few one's that really inspire me: Nigel Godrich, Tony Viscondi, Tchad Blake, Andrew Scheps.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: A lot of Brazilian music, that will go from rock, pop to hip hop.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I tend to thing that I have a really musical ear, that helps me finding problems. I'm also very organized.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Most of the time I try to elevate the song while still making it sound musical.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: At the studio, where I record and mix larger projects, we have Pro Tools HD with Apogee conversion, Dynaudio BM15 speakers, Distressors, LA-3A, DBX160, Roland Space Echo, etc. At home I have a smaller setup with an iMac 27'', Pro Tools HD Native, Neumann KH120 and NS10. Which is perfect for recording vocals or overdubs, editing and ITB mixing.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: It all depends on what the client needs. I'll try to identify it by having a conversation with the client, or by simply listen to the song and see how I can improve it.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: There's no right or wrong, there's just musical and not musical.
