Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
Gosh thats a hard one there have been many really have enjoyed about 99.9% of everything I've done so it would be hard to pick one? I really enjoyed working with Miss Badu people really seemed to like that" Badu live" record we made my role I played drums :) but my time with Roberta Flack and Herbie Hancock was equally awesome and Marcus Miller..Anyway I hope this interview will give you some idea of who I am and what I'm about and we are able to make some music!
What are you working on at the moment?
Funky Fly Project a young teen jazzfunk band of great young players the cd will be released in august 2017 i'm producing and arranging the project www.funkyflyproject.com go check them out!
Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
no not at the moment but I just signed up thought this would be a cool way to meet new people in the game
Analog or digital and why?
Both why each has a vibe if you can afford to use real tape and can print your song on it by all means go for it! nothing like tape saturation great way to get to digital. In the end at least to me all of the gear stuff is only as good has the person using it and the song that was written
What's your 'promise' to your clients?
that I'll get the job done right and on time.If its something I cant do I'll tell you I cant do it but I know a guy who can.I'm a straight shooter I dont waste time as I dont want my time wasted.....
What do you like most about your job?
Being a musician is a special gift that I dont take for granted music has taken me all over the world I'm very blessed to have a job I truly love
What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
that you can make poorly recorded music sound good in the end!...no amount of treatment can ever truly fix stuff that was recored bad to begin with .yes you tune vocals yes you can fix timing etc . but a poorly recorded whatever it is wont ever sound good unless it was ment to be some kind LOFI vibe type of thing..
What questions do you ask prospective clients?
standard stuff like how long have you been at the game? what is your time frame, what type of budget are you working with? are you open to music suggestions? Are you sending locked wave file at beat one? what are the song tempos? do you want a big or small drum sound or dry etc?
What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
though I've doing this for years i'm open to talk to anyone from novice to the pro about music you want to make and music in general hopefully we can both learn something new in the process
If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
drumset,sticks,mp3 player with a zillion songs on it long life to play to all the songs on the player
What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
I've been playing music since I was 2yrs 6months old only job I've ever had outside of a paper boy route at 13 which I sucked at
How would you describe your style?
My style thats easy..its whatever the project needs to make the music feel good again no preconceived notions no ego just do what the music is asking you to do.You get there by paying attention and using your ear's and heart.
Which artist would you like to work with and why?
well I've worked with so many great artist over the years I've been truly blessed. The only person who I wanted to work with really is gone now his name was Prince met him he was cool dude and many of my friends got to work with him(RIP John Blackwell).I wanted to work with him because he was my main influence for wanting to become a producer. other than that if you Google my name you can see the long list of people I've been bless to record with and tour with
Can you share one music production tip?
oh thats a easy one have no perceived ideas if you have the time and the idea try it! it might be the best idea ever in the history of music
What type of music do you usually work on?
All types I've done everything from Pop to Free Jazz. These days i'm producing more singer songwriter and RnB/Jazz types of sessions.Playing drums well the world is my stage done everything this year from today's country to pop to hiphop to funk to jazz in all its forms
What's your strongest skill?
being able to understand what musicians and creative people in general mean. Then paying attention to those details and applying them to the project at hand.I have had experience's with producers in the past who have asked me "Can you make your cymbals sound more like the color blue" I hit the cymbals till I found a stroke that sounded blue to that producer (true story) my strongest skill is my love of music and making it!
What do you bring to a song?
That no idea is wrong your music can be whatever you imagine in your mind its just about finding the right colors to paint that picture.Been around long enough to know if you make what you record feel good chances are real good others are going to feel that!.So that vibe I bring to music no matter where I'm working
What's your typical work process?
I dont think any artist or song is typical. If you have ever seen me play or heard me on a recording my goal as a drummer or producer or whatever my job function is to give the song what it needs to shine. At the end of the day the only thing that matters is the music made and the feeling it gave to the person who listened to it
Tell us about your studio setup.
small but deadly I use the new QSC touch to record my drums as the mic pre's are great i'm running cubase 9 pro necessary pulgins as I dont mix just record, edit, tune, comp . small arsenal of good mics Yamaha maple custom drums the real deal from japan none of this new cheap stuff from china plus loads of old vintage drums from Gretsch,Slingarland, to many snares to mention you give the idea in your mind for your drum sound I have the mic and drum and peramp to make it happen
What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
I grow up surrounded by music legends in New York city during the studio hey day's. I spent a lot of time in many famous now long gone nyc studios as well as producers like Dave Gursin, Afrika Bambaataa,Marcus Miller great engineers like Tom Lord Alge, Bassy Bob Brockman,Russell Elevado (I gave him his first real mixing gig back in the 80's ask him he'll tell you the same) So i know my way around the studio I've worked for and have learened from some of the best to ever do it
