Working with Shaun was a breeze! He was timely with his turnaround and gave me the exact result I was looking for. Awesome engineering and vocal production. Definitely a visionary individual. Looking forward to working with him again.

Interview with SZY (s-eye)

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I have been working on hard on my own solo project, pushing myself in a lot of new directions.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: That I won't give you a half-hearted product. If you hire me, you hire my name, and I don't want my name stamped on to work I wouldn't even show someone myself.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: I love makin' music, and helping people make their music. period

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: That there's some finish line. You know, that you "made it." This work is a constant test of will, and the people that really dedicate themselves to it aren't even guaranteed a spotlight. But it's not about that, and it never was for most people. I think just culturally we skim over how people get from point A to C, like the sweat and dirt gets forgotten when your life gets turned into a "before, and after photo..."

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: Please be as clear and concise as possible. Love hearing work samples, and music terminology. Man, if you have chord charts to anything, or any written music at all that makes life a breeze.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: I'm a laid back guy, patient and helpful to those who need it. Musically...a lot of my harmony comes inspired by these really lush, colorful chord voicings that you find in jazz, hip hop, and r&b. Mix in some pop elements, and you got a recipe for a record.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: Hmm...spend an extra 10 or 20 minutes picking your sounds. Don't settle for something that is jus, "okay for now" let the production take you down a rabbit hole.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: My performance experience has thickened my skin, and developed my ability to think quickly on my feet, ready to adapt to different material at the drop of a hat. It also honed in on my ability to interpret, empathize with, and communicate songs.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: I have been kind of a morning person lately. I usually wake up and hit the gym to clear my head, and settle in to work at the studio around 10 AM. If I am writing there are a number of odd rituals we all do to get in to that space, but if its a production or mixing job, I usually just sit down and can dive right in.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: I share a space with a set of other producers and writers at Studio 1 Zero in Hollywood. There are multiple rooms equipped with Mac Pros, Acoustic Treatments, Antelope Audio Interfaces, Yamaha HS8/HS5s, standard/ or boutique microphones....and a boatload of the latest plugins.
