Interview with Ethan Roberts

Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Analog is warm, fat, and imperfect. Digital is infinitely flexible and can lend itself to the speed of creatively. They both just tools that serve their purposes and just like the rest of my tools, I use the one that's called for when I create music.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What do you want, expect, and why are you creating this music? I find that often times what clients think they want, and what they actually want/want to use their music for are different. I'm here to help people make music they love and serves their purposes, whatever that may be. If someone wants me to create something that I don't think is in line with their purposes, I want to make sure they know that before I do it so they have a chance to re-evaluate.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Have a conversation with people, music samples are great representations of past work, but a conversation with a person will tell you if they GET what you are trying to do, and whether or not you click.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Sm57, Martin Eric Clapton model 000, Neve 1073, 1176 Rev E (or Purple MC77), UAD Apollo. 57 because I assume on the island there would be a lot of wind (ha) and it's a great all around piece of gear, Martin EC because it's the best acoustic I've ever heard and I could probably make all the music I need to with that, Neve 1073 because they are amazing and neutral enough to work on anything but still have that NEVEness, 1176 because they are just the best compressors and the Rev E kinda sounds like the D without the noise (again assuming you want to cut down on that because of wind lol.) UAD Apollo cause it does everything else.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't question your gut. And then do. Don't write(or produce) and edit simultaneously. Write, and then edit.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Seeing the big picture and the raw potential that something has to be great, and then bringing it into that point.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring to any song I work on my LOVE and passion for music, really of any genre, as well as my years of experience living in both LA and Nashville and getting to work with some of the top artists of our generation. I have a unique sound and voice that you aren't going to get from anyone else on here.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I do everything from writing custom music, producing, recording, and mixing it, to finishing other peoples almost finished work, and everything in between. I can play guitar, drums, keyboards and bass, I can also sing (if the song calls for a rock vocalist) and have a killer setup to be able to accommodate a wide variety of needs.My focus is writing Pop Radio hits, and writing professional quality music for TV/Film/Advertising needs
