Interview with Marvin Kim

  1. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  2. A: I use Apollo Twin Duo mark 1 interface and I use Logic X for most of my tasks, ProTools for recording and mixing. My monitoring is properly set up in my bedroom (KRK v6 series 2).

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: Every time I finish new projects, I feel more proud than the last project I've finished. Because I did it better than the last time in some way.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: I'm working on Cinematic vibe pop and hip hop/r&b vibe pop projects with my friends from Berklee. But apart from these, I am focusing on learning sound design skills on Serum.

  7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: No. I don't know anyone on SoundBetter personally. However, if anyone on SoundBetter ever wants to get in touch with me and talk, I would always love to do so. I'm a student so please excuse me for the delayed responses. Thank you!

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: I work most of the things in-the-box. This is because I don't have enough money to buy analog gears.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: I promise that I will try whatever it takes to make the song sound better - so please give me feedback!

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: Making people have a better moment in their lives - it's the best thing.

  15. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  16. A: Customers often ask if I'm experienced. I would confidently say that I am a professional; however, I am yet immature. I am always willing to negotiate the money part because of this. So you can pay how much ever you want to pay. If you are not satisfied with my work, you don't have to pay anything. At this point, I would have to remind you that I don't charge for reasonable revisions. However, if that's the case of my

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: I might seem like a result-oriented person but I'm also chill. So you can be comfortable with me.

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: What is the concept of the project?

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: I would be happy if my clients are honest about their opinion on my work. I always think that the attempt to satisfy clients' need will make our product better.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: Guitar, water bottle, laptop, Apollo twin duo, SRH-440

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: I've been playing instruments from 7, started taking guitar seriously from 13, then I got interested in production from two years ago. I've been studying Mixing and Sound Designing through YouTube channels. Also, I have practiced mixing through the multitrack of more than 60 songs.
