Nishant Nair on SoundBetter

Dynamic & Quality Mixes and Masters at a reasonable price!

Hi,there! Greetings from Resident Space Mixing!

My name is Nishant and I am a sound editing, mixing and mastering engineer based in Mumbai,India. I have been freelancing as a mix engineer for more than 5 years now.

My outlook while mixing is to adhere to this: The mix should service and enhance the song, regardless of the genre.

I always like to talk to my clients firsthand to get an idea of the direction they want the mix to go in and what reference tracks to use. It'll be a great if I could listen to a rough mix that you have done or if you could share the lyrics, what the song means to you, what phrase or theme stands out for you as an artist, what mood and vibe you want the song to convey, etc so I have a better understanding of your vision.Turn around time for a mix is generally 6-7 days and mixes are all done ITB (In the box).

You can check out the track You Were Gone by the band Insignia, mixed and mastered by me at Resident Space Mixing, uploaded here for reference. Additionally I have added my Soundcloud Playlist that includes all the mixes that I've done so feel free to browse through! Cheers and I look forward to working with you! :)

Send me a note through the contact button above.

Interview with Nishant Nair

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: When sending me files for a mix, please send mono tracks as mono files, & stereo tracks as interleaved. In general, remove all plugins, unless the plugin is an inherent part of the sound. If you're not sure about a track, send it both with and without plugins. Any virtual or MIDI instruments should be rendered to audio files.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: Mostly live recorded music and to be more specific, indie rock or blues.

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: I work In The Box for mixing. Pro tools is my choice of DAW. For monitoring, I have my very trustworthy pair of Neumann KH310 A monitors. The mix space itself a very well tuned room designed by the great John Brandt of John Brandt Acoustics!

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: I like to keep an approach where the mixes aren't too squished and the instruments can breathe in the mix while giving the impact that the style of music demands.

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: I would describe it as being persistent and burying my head into the session until I get a result I am happy with and eventually the artist is happy and satisfied with.

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: Radiohead. I'd just like to be in the room and observe. There's too much to learn.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: I have been assured time and again by my own experiences that listening to your mixes after a good distracting break can give you a more transparent idea because you aren't fooling yourself.

  15. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  16. A: Both.Depends on who's is using it and what it is that they are hearing.Personally, with today's advancement in tech, digital seems more workflow friendly and THIS is possible only because we are dealing with the digital domain. Having said that, I would still love to own a large format console and work on it someday. There's something very beautiful and tactile about working on a NEVE or an SSL type of a console.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: Translation. As an engineer, it is my job to make sure whatever I am given translates emotionally and sonically to whoever is listening.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: For mixing it basically begins by asking the client what band/artist they draw from, and if they have any rough mixes or demos for me to listen to.
