Interview with Jake "Aux" Swensen
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by reviewing the stems and understanding the direction of the record. I build the mix around strong vocal presence and a tight low end, then shape the tone and space to make the record feel bigger and more polished. Once the mix is ready, I send it for feedback and include revisions to ensure it matches the artist’s vision. After approval, I finalize the master and deliver streaming-ready files. I keep the process structured, efficient, and collaborative.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work from a treated studio environment based in San Francisco with accurate monitoring and a streamlined workflow built for consistency and fast turnaround. My setup is optimized for clean vocal processing, controlled low end, and reliable translation across streaming platforms and playback systems. I reference mixes across multiple listening environments to ensure they hit properly on headphones, car systems, and speakers. My focus is accuracy, clarity, and making sure your record translates everywhere.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by engineers and producers who balance clarity with impact in modern hip-hop. I respect the work of engineers like MixedByAli, Jaycen Joshua, and Leslie Brathwaite for their ability to keep vocals forward and powerful while maintaining depth and space in the mix. On the production side, I’m influenced by the way producers like Metro Boomin and Mike Dean shape low end and atmosphere, making records feel cinematic but still clean and competitive. I’m always studying records that feel polished without losing energy.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of my work involves mixing and mastering modern hip-hop and melodic rap records for independent artists. I focus on making vocals sit forward and clean while keeping the low end punchy and competitive for streaming platforms. A lot of the artists I work with already have strong records, my role is to elevate them. That usually means tightening vocal presence, enhancing clarity in the high end, controlling the low end so it hits hard without getting muddy, and creating space in the mix so everything feels bigger and more polished. My goal is always the same: take a good record and make it feel finished and industry-ready.
