Mixer Nico Kalwill has built an impressive discography, filled with hit records and independent releases in all genres of music. Universal, EMI, Warner, Sony, Sub-Pop, BMG, RCA have all hired Nico, harvesting over 20 Gold and Platinum albums and 2 Latin Grammy awarded albums.

Diverse projects have taken him to work in major studios such as Abbey Road in London, Sonic Ranch in Texas and La Fabrique in France. For more than a decade he's been responsible for the unique sound of American duo CocoRosie.

Growing up in Buenos Aires, Kalwill started engineering in the late nineties at the legendary Studio Panda, while studying audio and music production at Ceartec Recording Institute. After graduating in 2001, his restless curiosity lead him to move to Los Angeles and later to London, where he further developed his recording skills and started acquiring worldwide credits.

Interview with Nicolas Kalwill

  1. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  2. A: Indie Pop, Alternative, Dream Pop, Neo Soul, Experimental Rock, Neo-Psychedelia, Folk, Indie Electronic, Hip Hop.

  3. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  4. A: I can be very creative especially when the resources are limited. If I find a problem I take it as an opportunity. Although the famous quote "we'll fix it in the mix" has gained a bad connotation, I do enjoy the challenge!

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, Prince, Frank Ocean, Mac Miller, Kendrik Lamar, Dr. Dre., Alex Turner, Tame Impala, MGMT, Tchad Blake, Rick Rubin, George Martin, Serban Ghenea, Mark Stent, Bob Clearmountain.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Try to find the gem inside the artist's soul, and craft from there. Remember you are not a featured guest. We are there to strengthen their message, not to add our own!

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: Excitement, punch, warmth, width, depth, extended low end, loudness, movement, texture, kick, air, drive, feeling, personality, space, attitude, dimension, clarity, musicality, emotion.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: I own a professional mixing studio based on ProTools HD. My converters are Apogee Symphony mkII and I can insert some exceptional pieces of analog gear. The space is acoustically measured and treated to give me an extremely accurate frequency response, which accompanied by my Adams S3H, ensures a mix that translates well everywhere.

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: Mixing is my number one activity. I'm also hired for very often for producing and tracking drums.
