Interview with Ana-Marija Srejić R88 Studio
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Ratomir Martinović CD, published for NAXOS. I was producer, recording and mixing engineer.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog. When working with acoustic instruments or group of instruments complexity of a sound is big. Analog gear offers better substance and glues better all the harmonic and dynamic spectrum I operate with. Also, I believe that working in analog chain encourages proper way of thinking in a technical sence.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That I will invest all my knowledge into my work, listen to my intuition and work until we wre both satisfied.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Music is my favourite language to speak.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can't find common question really
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That I am a specialist in only classical music genre.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is the reference sound for them
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Classical, Jazz, Opera, Theatre, Americana
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Since I am mostly working on acoustic sound I do thend just to bring truth. Real live atmosphere, natural sound.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: The studio operates with a variety of high-end recording gear such as vintage ton of Neumann’s classics, some studio standards such as AKGs, and even esoteric mics such as Schoeps CMT series, made as a special edition in 1973. SSL preamps are there for ultra-clean SSL grade recordings but also UAD mic preamps with a unique tube/solid-state tone blending circuit. All of this is gathered around a 16 channel SSL super analogue summing mixer.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be as clear as possible and have trust.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Neumann M49 mic, Neve Portico stereo buss compressor, Schoeps stereo pair, some small SSL analog desk
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have started studying music when I was 4y old. At the age of 10 I knew that this will be my path. I was active as pianist, with excellent education and I got my master degree in Piano Performance at the age of 22. After that I have enrolled Audio Engineering at SAE Institute (Middlesex University) and managed to make just perfect communication of musical and technical knowledge. Just upon my graduation I have built my own studio and I have dedicated to recording and mixing mostly. Occasionally I would be engaged to do some sound design project which I enjoyed very much. I was also working in our biggest concert hall (Kolarac Concert Hall) as a recording engineer.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I am communicative and I speak the same language with musicians which has proven to make them super relaxed and cosy in the studio. I have patience to work on every single detail.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Yo-Yo Ma because sound he makes is divine. It should be always recorded the best possible way. Sting because he seems to be investing a lot of thoughts into his projects. The Teskey Brothers because I am very driven by their music. Norah Jones because microphone just adores her.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Do not search for a good sound. Have it in your head before you set your hands on a desk.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Very sharp ear and clear vision of a sound I wanna achieve.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Jonathan Wayner, Michael Brauer, Al Schmitt
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mostly do acoustic sound. Mostly classical and Jazz. But also sound for tv snd theatre.
