Interview with Tim Bell

  1. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  2. A: MEDUZA, Camelphat, ARTBAT, Tiesto

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: Oh.. "Queen Of Love" - My baby project. 1 day I drove my car and heard "White Town - Your Women" and said "Wow! I have to cover this!!!" So I went down my studio the same day and produced a complete track with that famous sample! After a few days of tweaking and mixing I send it to my manager which LOVED it ! We teamed up with a great producer Matteo (Xanti) and the talented singer "Elenoir" from Italy to make "Queen Of Love" sound and feel the way it is. After a long awaited year we signed it to "Polydor" records under the "Universal Music Group" and had such amazing support from the likes of Republic Records and top Radio while making it to the top 50 Viral UK Dance list on Spotify ! Made me really proud this one.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: I currently have two active projects - "Tim Bell" which is my electronic radio project (Signed under Universal through IHU Music) and my 2nd - "Avii" a new very dark techy project which about to see some nice releases very very soon !

  7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: Yeap, mostly singers.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: Analog most of the time cause I like the mechanism and the workflow. beside that I usually experience a more warm and "Fat" sound from analog devices which is really frustrating getting from digital products.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: Giving it all to make their music sound the way they dream it.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: As I open Cubase my smile is widen so.... but honestly having tears from my production is the best part of the job. You know that mind and spirit have joined together as one when this happens.

  15. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  16. A: Mostly question about how are we gonna do this, is it stem mixing? or just the whole track as one part? + if they can send me a reference. I always give detailed directions about the way we should do the work depends on the project, most of the time it ends up with a group of stems but happens when its different. About the reference, I think its almost a must. without a good reference its hard to achieve the client's desired mixing process.

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: Ah, mostly from people who are not in the bizz, always ask me if production means being a dj.. not the djing is bad but both are different subjects :)

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: First, who is the artist you would like your song to sound like? where is the inspiration coming from? Then I can navigate perfectly to match or better their sound. 2nd, what's the song path? Radio? Club? just for fun ? This helps me give some tips to focus their products to their needs.

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Do not sattle for less than what you desire, music mixing is an art and each artist will deliver a different vision of the way they process music, know that there are genres that requires specific match of instrumental mixing and its important to aim your mix to your biggest inspiration.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: Macbook Pro, Moog Subsequent 37, Bose HP, RME Sound card and a beer.

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: After doing big records on Majors I know what I truly go for is a hit record mostly in the dance category, I've been pushing for this for more than 8 years while producing for 12 years now.

  27. Q: How would you describe your style?

  28. A: Very authentic, recently even touched the Middle East world while recording Arabic vocals on a pure House track which soon will be released.

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: Camelphat is kind of a clear choice for me since siding with such talent drive motivation and teaches alot.

  31. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  32. A: Good music should come first, then worry about the mix and while mixing try to top the best out there while putting down the hours it takes.

  33. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  34. A: Techno and House are my strongest addiction though I touch almost every spectrum in the music world, I even love movie scoring and quite excel at that too.

  35. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  36. A: Putting myself into the music is what I find most appealing to me, there I put my mixing in place.

  37. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  38. A: First and most important I must connect with the song, emotionally. After I found my place within the art I start following my feelings and imprint them through sounds wether its melodies or harmonies, a driven bass or what ever comes to mind.

  39. Q: What's your typical work process?

  40. A: While project is open I tend to oregnize the stems to my liking, usually with specific groups for example : Vocals, Bass, Drums, Synths, Pads, Plucks, Instruments, Fx channel etc. After I have all that organised I start with stem by stem mixing while keeping reference with the client top pick. From Eq's to Compressors, levels, chaining and whats not to make the song sound pro. Mixed is done, up to Mastering and from there on I usually do some edits for international standard.

  41. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  42. A: Fully acoustic treatment from "Artnovion Acoustics". Geared up with RME Fireface soundcard, Analog synths such as Moog Subsequent 37 and Behringer Model-D, UAD Satelite for precision mixing and a Mac Pro machine to run this all up.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Mostly Mixing and Mastering for electronic music.
