Interview with Felix de la Cañada

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Both. Analog and Digital equipment generally have different qualities that they imprint into sound, but either can be better depending on what you're looking for. What's important is that it sounds good in the mix!

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: Creating art that can get people pumped up and that people can vibe with. That moment where you feel exhilarated after a session hearing your final mix.

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: I just press record and move faders. There's a lot more that goes into it, though of course that's part of it. Mic Choice, Preamp Choice, Gain Structure, Mic Placement, Effects Choice, Effects Parameters, Instrument Placement, Acoustic Treatment, Pre-Production, etc.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: -What are you looking to do? -What's your vision for your project? -What type of sound are you looking for? -How much input from me do you want on your project? -What equipment/space do you have? -How long do you think the project will take?

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: More isn't always better. Sometimes people will go overboard with processors and effects and it'll make a project worse in the long run.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: Having a good ear.
