Each song has a unique way of reaching it's goal and we'll find that together. Any music that is created by a passionate artist speaks to me! I love the process of helping a song find a life!

We are a Pro Tools based studio with plenty of virtual instruments, plug ins, and analog vintage keys to get the sound you're looking for.
We're not a big studio, but we sound like one!
Tell me about your project and we'll make it happen!

Once again Josh smacked it out of the park! He knows exactly what I'm looking for, and how to make it work, even when the tracks I have are a bit older and in need of a bit of a massage. Thank you Josh for making me happy to hear myself!!! :)

Josh is just amazing at taking my work, my thoughts, and my goals and turning around something that sounds somehow both exactly what I wanted and exactly something unexpected - about as good as it gets!

Josh is amazing! He took a song that I had had sitting around for nearly two decades - and thus wasn't recorded properly - and made a gem out of it! Absolutely wonderful, knew exactly what the track needed and I never felt in better hands. I will 110% be working with Josh again!

Interview with Josh Gold-The Basement Studio

  1. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  2. A: Stevie Wonder, Rick Rubin, Earth Wind + Fire, Tom Petty, The Chainsmokers, A Tribe Called Quest, The Beatles, Ed Sheeran, The Wailers, Paul Simon, Thelonious Monk, Prince, Michael Jackson, Peter Gabriel, Warren Huart, Mike Posner, and everyone I've ever played with and shared a stage with!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm either mixing or tracking depending on the day!

  5. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  6. A: What's the best way to be prepared for the studio? The answer is usually to be as prepared to be adaptable as you can be! It's fantastic to have all your parts practiced and arranged and tight... but sometimes the best stuff comes from sudden inspiration, and when that strikes you need to be able to embrace it.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: what are your goals for the sessions?

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: my style is client-centric; or song-centric! whatever the client needs to get the song to the place where it conveys it's message.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: That we will be open and up front about all aspects of the process, and will work as hard as possible to realize your vision.

  13. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  14. A: I'm currently collaborating on a project with Paul Kastick, the super talented drummer and producer from Big Mountain and Maxi Priest. It's a remix of a project I originally did with a singer songwriter. We've taken on the song on some adventures!

  15. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  16. A: Tim Leitner is an excellent producer and engineer. We've worked on many projects together.

  17. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  18. A: I feel most comfortable in digital. It offers opportunities for creativity, flexibility and easier collaboration. Plus, there are so many ways to replicate analog workflow...

  19. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  20. A: Collaborating to create new art!

  21. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  22. A: That big music can't come from a small studio. (it can!)

  23. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  24. A: Think about artists who inspire you. What is it about those artists that draws you in? What aspects of their works do you want to be reflected in yours?

  25. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  26. A: A condenser mic, interface, laptop, midi controller, and a ukulele.

  27. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  28. A: I was a full time touring musician for over 20 years before going into production full time.

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: I'd love to work with Paul Simon because he is genre-less.

  31. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  32. A: Always be open to new things!

  33. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  34. A: I love to work on everything from folk to hip hop.

  35. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  36. A: Bringing a song to a spot where it is both unique and accessible.

  37. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  38. A: An ear for the possibilities of where the song could go.

  39. Q: What's your typical work process?

  40. A: I like to get a sense of the song or at least the vibe of the song first; find out what the artist is trying to communicate. Then, work to convey that message in a beautiful way!

  41. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  42. A: It's called the Basement Studio because.... it's in my basement! While it might not be as opulent as some of the bigger studios, it sounds like a big studio; and that's what important!

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Each project is unique! My work ranges from mixing existing tracks to full production and mastering.
