Interview with Gimu
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I listen to alot of dark / emotional HipHop (Lil Peep, Juice WRLD, $uicideBoy$) aswell as lots of early 2000s Metalcore such as As I Lay Dying, Bring me the Horizon etc. I'm very impressed by the works of John Browne from Monuments
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Right now im working on my own Project which will be a 6 Tracks EP where i did everything myself. From Production to Recording, Mixing and Mastering.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work with Hiphop / Trap Music. Usually including some Rapping aswell as Signing. Most Instrumentals come prearranged and mixed, but i can provide for this too if handed the needed stems. I also work with many Metal
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: i will handle each project individually. not everything that worked in the past will work on future projects. so i will be figuring out what best suits your needs.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I will usually first load up the Stems, do some arranging for efficient workflow, then start with basic audio editing such as comping, adjust timing and pitch where needed. after this i will enhance the individual sounds with EQ, Panning and Compression to level and place everything where it needs to be. in a final stage i apply more creative fx like delays, reverbs, stutters, beat stops and so on. This is also when you will first hear your project mixed, after you being ok with the result, i will master the project by enhancing the stereofield, master bus compression to glue everything aswell as maximizing the volume to compete with industry standard recordings.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital all the Way - It's not only more affordable, but also great sounding! so many great analog gear has been translated to a digital plugin giving you huge sounds & emulating the originals.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Every Song is different so this wont get boring for me anytime soon. I like to think myself into a new piece of music, thinking about what might add to the piece and whats gonna take away from it.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: "Just make it sound good" Some People tend to think we do some mystical Alchemy stuff in the Mixing Process. But thats really not the case, its just enhancing what was recorded, which can turn out pretty awful if the source material was of poor quality to begin with.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Make sure your Recorded Material is of Quality. Its difficult to polish a turd, so make sure you're not missing out on great sound in the recording stage already.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I'm not that much of a gear head, i usually mix everything in the box, meaning i dont process using analog gear. I guess it'd just be my Computer,an Audio-Interface, a Midi-Controller and both of my Monitors.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started doing Mixing and Mastering Tasks 4 Years ago when i decided i want to take my own Music to another level. i have worked on many Songs of Family and Friends since then. in 2017 i decided to attend a class for professional Audio Engineering at S.E.T. in Germany which i have graduated now.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Absolutley loving Lil Peep, he has a very unique style. Sadly this will never happen. RIP.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I would always listen to what a Song needs, there is no Way to Go for me, i need to hear whats already there, then build upon that.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work in a dedicated Home Studio and rely on Digital Processing.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: given the nature of trap and hiphop music, i would usually mix around 5-10 vocal tracks to a pre-mixed instrumental. where i do not have this premixed instrumental i will do this on my own, also working with live drums and instruments.
