I help vocal groups, solo artists and producers get tight, natural vocals. Specialist in vocal editing, tuning, mixing and arranging for a cappella, jazz, pop and Brazilian music. Musical edits, clean mixes and vocals that feel alive, every time.
Hi! I’m Rafael Carneiro, a vocal editor, mixer and arranger with over 15 years of experience specializing in vocal music. I help singers, vocal groups and producers worldwide achieve natural, clean and musical vocal productions.
My background as a singer and vocal arranger allows me to approach vocal editing and mixing not just technically, but musically. I focus on delivering vocals that are tight, in tune and in time, but always preserving the emotion, the groove and the natural feel of the performance.
I specialize in vocal editing (comping, timing and tuning), vocal mixing, and vocal arranging for a cappella groups, jazz ensembles, pop and Brazilian music. Whether you need a clean edit, a professional vocal mix or a custom arrangement for your vocal group, I’m here to help.
I’ve worked on hundreds of projects, helping clients around the world bring their vocal-centered productions to life, with vocals that sound polished, warm and real, never over-processed or artificial.
If your project is voice-driven, let’s work together. I’ll help your vocals sound exactly how they should: natural, clean and emotionally powerful.

Interview with Rafael Carneiro
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Working on a project with Take 6 was a huge honor, editing vocals for one of the most iconic vocal groups ever. I’m also proud of my work with Sambaranda, a vocal jazz group I co-founded, where I’m the arranger, editor, and mixer.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m working on several vocal projects, including editing and mixing for vocal groups, jazz singers, and pop productions from clients around the world.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes, producers and mixers like Bill Hare are big references in the vocal world. I’d also recommend instrumentalists or mastering engineers depending on the project.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, for precision, flexibility, and recall. With the right plugins and careful work, digital can sound warm, deep, and musical while offering full control.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Your vocals will sound clean, tight, musical, and natural, never over-processed, never robotic. I will treat your voice with the same care I treat my own.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Helping artists feel proud of how their vocals sound. Seeing a performance come to life with clarity and emotional impact is incredibly rewarding.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: “Can you make it sound perfect without sounding fake?” Absolutely. That’s exactly my specialty: natural-sounding perfection.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That vocal editing is just “fixing mistakes.” It’s much more, it’s about enhancing the performance, tightening the groove, respecting phrasing, dynamics, and making vocals sit perfectly in the mix.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask about the style, the emotional intention behind the vocals, reference tracks they like, and whether they prefer a super-clean or a more natural/raw vocal feel.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for someone who understands both the technical and musical sides of vocal production. Great editing is not just about being perfect, it’s about serving the song.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Apollo Twin, Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro, MacBook with Logic Pro, Melodyne, and FabFilter Pro-Q.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started as a singer and vocal arranger over 15 years ago. My deep involvement with vocal groups naturally led me to specialize in vocal editing, tuning, and mixing. I’ve been working professionally in vocal production for over a decade.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Clean, musical, transparent. I aim for vocals that feel polished but natural, with clarity, warmth, and emotional impact.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Take 6, they are the gold standard of vocal music for me. Their precision, groove, and harmonic richness are an endless source of inspiration.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: When editing vocals, less is often more. Aim for clean timing and tuning, but don’t erase every imperfection, sometimes the magic is in the subtle human nuances.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: A cappella, jazz, pop, Brazilian music, and any vocal-centered project. Anything where the voice is the main character.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Vocal editing with musicality. I edit as a musician, not just a technician. Tight vocals that still breathe, feel alive, and connect emotionally.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring precision, musicality, and respect for the voice. My goal is to make the vocals sound polished but natural, emotional but tight, always enhancing the performance without taking away its soul.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First, I listen carefully to the raw vocals to understand the performance and style. Then I clean takes, comp if needed, align timing naturally, and tune with care to preserve the singer’s identity. For mixes, I focus on clarity, warmth, depth, and making the vocals feel present, musical, and alive.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work in a treated home studio designed for precision in vocal production. My main gear includes an Apollo Twin Quad, Yamaha HS5 monitors, Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro and AKG K240 headphones. My DAW is Logic Pro, and I use a suite of plugins from UAD, Waves, iZotope, Melodyne, Soundtoys, IK Multimedia, and FabFilter.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by vocal production Bill Hare, and by vocal groups like Take 6 and. I also draw a lot from Brazilian music and jazz, where groove and subtlety are everything.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I specialize in vocal editing, tuning, and mixing, especially for vocal groups, a cappella, jazz, pop, and Brazilian music. Most of my work involves cleaning vocals, making them tight and natural, while preserving the musicality and emotional feel of the performance.
