Remote Mixing and Mastering

Felipe González Camarena on SoundBetter

I believe in music being a message carrier not an ego booster.

Life without music would be a mistake. Music needs to be heard at its best with a great mix and master work done only to enhance the message and not transform it. This is what thrusts my whole existence. What i offer is a unique kind of mixing using mostly analog gear, 2 inch 24 ch tape machine run thru and a fresh set of ears for your project to achieve the best exposure of that moment recorded.

Interview with Felipe González Camarena

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: My mixing is kind of a hybrid from both worlds since each plug in or piece of gear does a very unique task. i choose mostly analog gear cause of the color and true harmonic saturation smooth for ones hearing which can´t be given by a digital sound. but digitally you can be more precise in certain aspects or automation of the mix.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: Entire satisfaction.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: i usually ask "What are you trying to say with this song." Since that is where the whole concept got it´s live then that is the most important thing to understand. I rather know what the song is talking about and not who the artist wants to sound like. Can´t force an ego to the song.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: It´s been 14 years since i began in music buisness. Every situation, production, album, single, mistake and achievement has been a wonderful experience filled with wisdom to get me where i am today.

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: Pure and organic, instruments already sound beautiful, its not our job to transform their sound, we need to enhance it not change it.

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: i´m all about definition and image, 3D Sound would be what best defines the kind of work i do.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: The studio is well geared with a 32 ch Neve 5088, 24 ch 2" tape MCI Mara Machines, racks that go from the basic distressor to specialized coloring instruments such as Kush audio and Chandler Abbey road EMI editions.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: The first approach i have is getting to know each other (Client and myself), music being an expressed emotion we have to fully understand where it comes from to know where is it heading. After doing this mixing becomes clearer since you know what is and why is the investment of time and effort on that particular song. As for mastering it´s always a hear and hear again game, since mixes already got approved and sound at their best mastering becomes a matter of what can i give the song to enhance it or even if i have to do anything at all.
