A self taught musician since the age of 10, Stephen has produced or engineered a handful of great sounding tracks for bands such as Dream in Colour Kidz, Trails and Good Troy Edwards. Stephen has also done recordings for the Queensland Wind Orchestra and has most recently been Audio Engineer and Camera Operator for Lloyds World (A show about guitar pedals).

Stephen obtained an Associates degree in Audio Production in 2017 and has continued to work within the audio education sector as an AV Technician, assisting in the setup of recording and post production studios as well as tutoring students in recording studios or DAW operation.

Interview with Stephen Rumph

  1. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  2. A: I freelance out to my clients homes, so I'm always on the move. I usually mix for singer/songwriters, but can do anything from hip hop to heavy metal and more.

  3. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  4. A: I really like Tchad Blake he is a great producer and has a really creative mind.

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: I work in the box, so I just work from my desk, focusrite 18i20, Beringer 200 Pre and Dbx166xs compressor. I find these to do the job.

  7. Q: What's your typical work process?

  8. A: I really get to know the song and what the artist is going for. I just start with a big clean edit and then see what stands out. After that it's the time to make it sound amazing

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: As much of the true sound of the artist resonated.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: Automation and EQ I would say my skills are best. That and I have a good set of ears.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: Rock, Singer/songwriter and heavy

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Train your ears and edit your tracks the best you can every time

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: King Gizzard and the Lizzard Wizard because they are recording and pushing the boundries of music all the time

  19. Q: How would you describe your style?

  20. A: Creative

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: About 5 years. I started by sitting in and helping on recordings and offering to record my friends bands for free

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: My ZOOM recorder, phone, vollyball named Wilson and some water

  25. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  26. A: Just look for someone who is familiar with your style and most importantly they listen to some music you like or similar.

  27. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  28. A: What are you listening to at the moment, are you after a particular sound, what are you intending to do with the song after completion.

  29. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  30. A: People think I work in a huge studio, but I work from home and I work in the box which means I work exclusively inside the computer bar the compressor I have. I work with analog emulations of old gear that ai think still sound good and are less on the overheads.

  31. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  32. A: Can you fix up timing issues in my track? Most of the time I can, however it is super out of time I recommend just redoing it. Can you make my track sound like a band I like? I will definitely try to get as close to them as possible. I use a guide track on all my mixes this helps to get the sound your after.

  33. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  34. A: I get to work from home and be creative with music. It is my dreams come true.

  35. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  36. A: I will try my best to get it right and will redo the track if you're not happy.

  37. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  38. A: I have more experience with Digital and the technology coming out of digital is really inpressive. Some may even emulate the best analog gear in the world.

  39. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  40. A: I don't know of anyone yet but when I do I'll let you know.

  41. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  42. A: I'm working on a surf rock revival type album at the moment. I'm trying to use some of the frequency bass range found in hip hop to get a more unique and modern sound.

  43. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  44. A: I recorded, mixed and mastered my own band in 2015 at a friend's house with a collection of both of our gear. It was out in the woods and we worked day and night. The album recieved Album of the Week in the local Street Press in Melbourne Australia. For a bedroom recording this was a huge deal.
