I was really impressed, not only is jeff an expert engineer but he is also a really great teacher. He wants you to leave with a good mix but he also wants you to understand what awesomeness he inserted to the mix and how he did it. In my opinion, he is my go-to.

Interview with Jeff Figueroa

Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Dom Bodo. I've worked with him before, and he's a pretty awesome musician.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Who would you like to sound similar to? When can I see you guys play live?
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My computer, my interface, my monitors, Slate ML-1, and a guitar.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Either Green Day and Twenty Øne Pilots. Green Day, because I grew up with them and they are my rock icons. Twenty Øne Pilots, because there is so much room for creativity and experimentation. Oh! And Galactic Empire because metal Star Wars music is the best.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: When EQ'ing anything, ignore the "rules" everyone talks about online, they're usually wrong, its about what sounds right to you.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I find my mixes are quite bright but still hit pretty hard in the low end.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I don't overthink it, that's really important. I'll edit and clean things, but once I start mixing, I go as it comes. I'll route my template, but then I go through and grab the first thing my fingers point at, and mix as my heart demands.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My Home Studio is powered by a Mac Mini connected to a Slate Raven and a Slate VRS8. My hybrid setup leaves me open for some hardware compressors if I feel I need that sound.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I was taught by a bunch and inspired by even more. Dan Grigsby, Richard Blakin, Shamel Hughes, Chris Theis, all names that taught me. Neal Avron and Andrew Wade is probably my greatest mix inspiration right now.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I am often hired as a tracking and mix engineer. I do both about equally for different people.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m playing trombone is a small rock band from Queens, NY, and that’s been really fun, it really helps me listen for musical nuance, and that really helps me in the mix, especially when I’m mixing music in their genre.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started off by writing a song and getting it recorded. I then decided that I was done paying for studio time and decided to learn it myself. 2014 I released an album for a friend and it was absolutely horrible. I went to school and I was being taught by industry professionals and taking all their best traits and combining them to create the best sounding mix possible. Now I’m mixing people’s music and watching them glow as they listen to it.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I want to make your ears stand when listening. I’ll make sure the snare hits you in the chest and the guitars fly at you, but not to your face, just right past your ears to make way for vocals to come in and meld with you. I like subtly in my mixes, but when I want you to hear something, you’ll hear it.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I tracked a portion of a friend of mine's band's album which released late 2018. We recorded Sax, Trumpet, and a string quartet, and had a blast doing it. We also recorded a hidden song that would have been placed on the Vinyl if it had been released.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mostly Rock and Metal. The attitude and the passion these guys bring into their music inspires me, and I want to make sure that they maintain that attitude through the mix.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog for the warm sound people crave, but digital for how clean and simple it makes the process. It is affordable too which makes it just that much better.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will stop at nothing until you are happy with what you received.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Meeting new people and helping people's dreams and ideas come to life.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: How quickly can you get this done? A: When do you need it by? I can do it in any time frame.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: It is not as easy as it may look. What I, and many other people on this site do is an art form. It takes delicacy and it takes years to get to where we are now.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Trust that the price is what it is for a reason. You may get a bad egg here and there, but often if the price is low, it is to attract cliental, and if it is too high it is because they feel they are worth that investment and often times they are.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Speed. I have gotten faster and faster in the past year and now I can edit your track while you talk to me. You won't even realize it until I play it back for you.
