Interview with Chief, Breaking Music

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The album no-vacancy by lost spaces. I was the producer and composer for the album. It was mostly just me and the vocalist Sam Lopez in a room. Every single song came out with such ease. It's the most fun I've had working. Amongst my favorites are boxset.girlfriend and discohaze.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: I like using analog gear for mastering. There's just nothing like it in the digital realm I'm completely digital for mixing mostly cause it's super fast and easy to make any changes

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: My promise is efficiency and effectiveness. I've spent way too long with delays in working with people in the creative industry and I don't want to put my clients through the same.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: I don't deny that I am lucky to be able to live and breathe my passion. I haven't had a boring moment since I started doing this for a living.

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: Find the person right for you. It may not be a style or a genre thing. But when you find the person who works well with you. Things move fast.

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: Just my laptop and a pair of headphone would do.I'm a simple guy!

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: I've been doing this since 2012. Dropped out of school when my band was making money and never looked back.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: I have a deep love of pop music. Most of the songs I work on are pop or pop-adjacent branching out to Indie, RnB, Electronic and Dance

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: My strongest skill is my organizational skills.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: I bring a unique and pragmatic approach to the process of song making. Using my experience of living in multiple countries and cultures. As well as the determination of making the artist happy and finishing the song.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: I'd rather an early morning than a late night. I work in 8-hour shifts with breaks. Depending on whether I'm working with an artist or mixing or mastering on my own. I try to have focus and be productive every session

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: As a minimalist. My set up is a lean mean machine. Just the things I need and nothing more. My focus is always to get things done and not be distracted by too much gear

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: I'm a huge fan of producers Rick Rubin and Pharell. I am a process-oriented person. And the unique approach to music-making these producers bring excite me.

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: Most of my work involves mixing and mastering, although, I have produced a fair bit of songs.
