Dave Arrowsmith

Guitarist, mixing

Dave Arrowsmith on SoundBetter

"Once again I am so pleased with what you've done; it's pretty much just as I saw it in my head" - Andy Stevens, singer-songwriter. "Superb guitar tone and masterfully played guitar" - John Bell, Chapel Bell Studio, Oxford.

With my studio fitted out with some top quality digital audio gear as well as my fabulous 633 Ruby+ guitar amp and cool electric and acoustic guitars, I am now able to provide online guitar sessions and mixing for your project.

I've been a musician playing in a variety of ensembles for most of my life so I am used to being part of a team serving one purpose - the music. To quote one of my influences, Mark Knopfler, "the song is king".

That means delivering sympathetically arranged, cleanly recorded guitar parts and mixes whose only purpose is to serve the song.

For all audio examples here and on my Soundcloud page, I played all guitar parts and mixed in my studio. Some also include my bass playing and MIDI programming.

Interview with Dave Arrowsmith

  1. Q: What's your typical work process?

  2. A: I like to understand what has inspired the tune - it's more fulfilling that way, and ultimately produces better results.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: Country-infused blues and rock, Americana, jazz-fusion, singer-songwriter.

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: Listening.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: Empathy with whatever it is you are trying to achieve. Everything else - my knowledge of music harmony and theory, guitar ability, audio technique, ears and equipment - are just tools that enable me to achieve that.

  9. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  10. A: It's well treated (acoustically, I mean) - I spent a lot of time tweaking to achieve a tight bottom end, even reverb times and accurate imaging. Equipment is based around a superb Universal Audio Apollo Quad up to 192kHz 24bit. I also have many (and increasing!) UAD-2 plugins. Then some quality microphones including a Neumann TLM103, which I tend to gravitate to most of the time for acoustic guitar and vocals - into Focusrite ISA preamps makes a great combo!

  11. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  12. A: That thing where people say "very <insert artist here>"... hmmm, well, in my case, it's often Mark Knopfler, Larry Carlton, Albert Lee, Jeff Beck, Albert Collins. So pretty eclectic but finger-picking is a common theme. Of course I like to think I have my own sound :).

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: Electric and acoustic guitars, together with mixing, all sympathetic to the final product.
