Interview with Stefan Pommerin

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: We are working every day on new projects, usually more than one and the tasks can vary.

  3. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  4. A: Usually pricing questions. Masters are at 125USD/Song.

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: Modern and effective.

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: Everything is based on the Universal Audio Apollo X16, X8p & Twin X interfacing. Main monitors are Adam A77X's in a professionally treated room-in-room. My go-to analogue spices are the SSL Fusion, Dangerous Music 2Bus+ and Warm Audio Bus Comp.

  9. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  10. A: Too many to list all but a few names: Chris Lord Alge, Will Putney, Adam "Nolly" Getgood, Austin Hull, Hans Zimmer and many many more.

  11. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  12. A: It used to focus on full stack production. From co-writing, pre-pro to recording, post production, mixing and mastering. Nowadays I focus more on remote mixing & mastering, though.

  13. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  14. A: There's too many to list, I will fill this in later when I know THE project. In general I'm simply proud of how far we have come already and all the cool projects we got to work on and beautiful people we have met along the way!

  15. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  16. A: New here so, nope, not yet. I'm sure many fellow colleagues are here, though!

  17. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  18. A: Both! Why not? Digital is hands down very convenient but there are some things that analog just does better.

  19. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  20. A: Satisfaction guarantee 🔥

  21. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  22. A: Freedom

  23. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  24. A: I wouldn't know 🤷🏼‍♂️

  25. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  26. A: What is your desired sound? Who are you trying to sound like? What do you want your master to be like? dynamic? loud? brickwalled? warm? scooped? punchy? conservative? “go to town?” analog? organic? clarity? muddy?

  27. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  28. A: Know what you want and have your files ready, we get rocking quickly!

  29. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  30. A: 1) Speakers 2) Interface 3) SSL Fusion done :-)

  31. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  32. A: Like many other producers and engineers it all started as musician. At the age of 7 I got my first keyboard, at 10 my first guitar and guitar lessons, at 13 I started to take drum lessons and at age 17 I became a drum teacher myself. I played in bands and toured throughout Germany as drummer. As it happens, the band broke up and I was tired of having to practise drums by myself and a friend of mine introduced me to Steinberg's Cubase and showed me the basics of how to create music to practise drums to. I later became an EDM artist and also started to mix demos for local bands. Few years later I moved to Finland where I started an audio production company with my wife and here we are :-) Close to 20 years in touch with music and audio now.

  33. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  34. A: Bring Me The Horizon, because I like their genre breaking modern approach to music and wouldn't mind being a part of that movement. 🙂

  35. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  36. A: Less cowbell is sometimes more 😉 No but seriously, as a music producer I would say; Get it right at the source. I've seen too many "fix it in the mix" or "fix it in post" mentalities. Put in the extra effort to get it right at the get go.

  37. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  38. A: Started with EDM and modern metal-genres, nowadays I try to get a good amount of variety and have worked with pretty much every genre.

  39. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  40. A: I actually care about the outcome and listen to the client scope. As I used to be an artist and band member myself, I'd say I know how it is to be on the other side of the glass. I have multi genre experience and have been doing 'audio' for over 20 years now.

  41. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  42. A: An audible "level up"! :-) Be it in writing, production or mastering, my clients are usually very happy with the results.

  43. Q: What's your typical work process?

  44. A: I inquire what the client is looking for, taking notes and discussing best approaches and then getting right to it!
