Interview with Josh

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: The biggest misconception about what we do is making terrible recordings sound like radio quality recordings that were recorded with proper levels and staging in million dollar studios. One piece of advice for anyone wanting to do music, get it right during the recording process. Never ever rely or think that the engineer can fix everything. If your vocals or the track or anything comes to me and there's massive unpleasant distortion happening in the track, I wont be able to remove that and that's a fact. If you give me a song that is a 2/10 the most I can do is bring it to a 6/10, but if you really put the time into getting your recordings to sound the best they can and get them to a 7/10, you bet I can bring that track to an 11.

  3. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  4. A: Don't be afraid to ask for specific things and do not be afraid to be crystal clear on what you are wanting. I've seen many times, people sugar coating what they say because they don't want to come off as rude or annoying but I find that in order to get what you're looking for, you need to be clear about what you want otherwise you could be going in circles over and over trying to achieve something that isn't being dealt with because it isn't being communicated properly.

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: If I could take only five pieces of gear I would most likely take my computer, my monitors, my interface, my headphones, and a wifi router haha. Gotta keep the grind alive no matter where I am.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I have worked with a few locals in my area and contributed almost 3 full years into my craft. I am constantly learning and studying everyday from professionals in the industry to become the best I can become within my field.

  9. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  10. A: If you are looking for someone on SoundBetter to master your music, I would recommend Andres Mayo. He is a top quality master engineer that I have personally worked with before. He is professional and has a great work ethic. He can definitely bring you that top quality consistency with your mastered songs.

  11. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  12. A: Both. Although I do not have any analog equipment, I am fairly familiar with the sound of analog and I am fan of the warmth and realness you get with it but I also feel strongly that with digital you have much more freedom and capabilities that you can do with plugins. Not to mention the amount of analog emulations out there that provide a similar quality you would get from a analog mix.

  13. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  14. A: My promise to my clients is that I will do my absolute best to get them the results they are looking for while also accommodating to any specific requests they have for the song.

  15. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  16. A: What I love about this line of work is the amount of new music I get to listen to. I love music, so getting it to sound like the hit records you hear on the radio is always so fun to me.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: One of my main questions I usually ask my clients is what their favorite artists are and what they are looking to get out of their mix. Understanding what kind of music they listen to helps me understand where they want to fit in the music scene and can sometimes help me translate what I can bring to my mixes to help achieve that certain sound that they love to listen to.

  19. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  20. A: One artist I would love to work with one day is Pharrell Williams for the simple fact that he is one of my biggest inspirations in the music scene.

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: One of my biggest production tips I would give to anyone is that less is more. The more crowded the song is the harder it is for you to sing or rap on it, it also can overwhelm a listener if there is too much going on. Sometimes just letting something breathe gives more life to a track than filling it up with something unnecessary.

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: I tend to usually work on more hip-hop and rap records as well as pop records since they have many influences from hip hop culture. From time to time though I don also work on more alternative music, whether its rock music, alt rock or even pop punk music.

  25. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  26. A: I would say one of my strongest skills is getting punchy sounding drums. With Timbaland being one of my biggest inspirations, drums play a huge role in the music. It is a foundation that gives the song its groove and I always try to focus on getting the drums I receive to hit a certain way to make you feel it in your chest.

  27. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  28. A: I don't have a stamp that I try to imprint on a song. What you WILL get from me is a record full of life and energy and character that best fits the music. There is no 'one size fits all' when it comes to mixing. It is an art form in itself so I make sure that I cultivate every idea brought to me and bring it to new heights.

  29. Q: What's your typical work process?

  30. A: When I receive a song to be mixed the first thing I always do is listen to it. Critically listening to the song is the most important part of the process cause it helps me figure out the vibe of the track and figure out where to take it in order to get it into the next level.

  31. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  32. A: I monitor through a pair of Yamaha HS7's in a medium sized room. I have a fully acoustic treated room sourced from Prime Acoustics to get a quality sounding room to make sure that I can properly mix each track I do confidently. Every mix is done fully ITB with a wide variety of top plugins that I use to make sure I get the best quality mixes. I use plugins from SlateDigital, Plugin Alliance, Waves, FabFilter and many more.

  33. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  34. A: Some of my biggest inspirations in music are timbaland, the neptunes, and tyler, the creator. All of these producers have such a unique flavour to them that I personally connect with on a deep level. I also have a deep respect for some engineers such as Chris Lord-Alge, MixedbyAli, Leslie Brathwaite and Jaycen Joshua. Their techniques of achieving quality within a track is always inspiring to watch.

  35. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  36. A: I mix their tracks and turn them into hit records. I do some production work on the side as well to help enhance the music.
