Interview with Sascha Rissling I Mixing

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I am very proud of the first song of my portfolio. I had a very nice clicking moment in my head while working on it. I specialized some workflow stuff in there that make my life way easier. i mixed, reamped, processed midi drums and did some artistic work to add excitement and atmosphere.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: When I'm not mixing clients I always work on my own music or acquire new clients. No dead time.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Brian Hood (i guess)

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital. I dont want to spend that amount of money for stuff that i can 98% sound alike with plugins.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will give you my best work.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love guitars. Still - i love everything about them. The sound, the frequency range, the sonic specifications. I even love editing them.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Will you mix our Album for free? - No i wont.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: People think i work at TV. I dont! My grandma thinks i'm with Radio Television Luxemburg. Which is really really big over here. But i'm glad i'm not.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What do you want to sound like?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Please let all your audio tracks begin at the same point.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My Macbook (because i wouldnt have a keyboard with my mac pro. it would be an extra item right? haha), my Kemper, my main guitar, Sennheiser HD650 headphones and my Focusrite Saphire pro24.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I have been doing music eversince and never really hooked with a job in any other economy. 2012 i went to Australia and decided to be a Musician. I came back and i toured a good part of the world with my band so far. in early 2015 i decided to go to recording school because i got really into recording the two years before. Late 2016 i graduated with the weird Diploma Audio Engineer name. Which is really weird to say in Germany.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: It is very modern and clear sounding. Its not for everyone. But no one's style is for everyone.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Katatonia. Its one of my favourite band and i would like to catch the dreamy atmosphere with them.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Trust your ears and not your parameter. If it sounds good it sounds good.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Mostly its modern / heavy / progressive rock and metal.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is that i am a professional musician in a band myself and i have been on the other side demanding stuff from engineers. So i am happy to know both sides and i know whats going on in the head of my clients.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I can bring life, momentum and excitement to songs. But always in the meaning of the customer. I would never add electronic beats to a song if i knew the customer was an old school rock fan in his 50's. Even if i would - it would be a second mix.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I listen to the rough-mix or idea of the client and try to hear the story away from my desk. I do this as many times until i get it, then i catch that wave of inspiration and go straight into my digital workstation and start setting either the drums if its instrumentally focussed or the vocals if its for example music with clean vocals that are mandatory for the story of the music. The rest happens from there.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My studio setup is very simple yet effective. My table/workstation has just a few things in/on it but those are my most effective tools and i can create anything i want with them.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I am inspired by people that never stagnate and do something new like Joel Wanasek, Brian Hood or Joey Sturgis

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: The most common thing i do is the following process: -Client (Band) gives me raw DI guitar tracks, programmed drum data, vocal tracks -i reamp the guitars and bass and process the drums -i mix the song
