Interview with Refine Audio | Ryan Sullivan

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: I began working in audio post-production in Africa's only dedicated mastering studio at the time, in the year 2002. Since then, I've worked in some of the top studios in the world with some of the biggest artists and brands, ranging from major label artists and radio production right through to Hollywood film work and composition for global brands advertising. My heart is in the music more than anything else.

  3. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  4. A: Yes, make your reverbs sound much more controlled and "expensive" by eq'ing out the unwanted frequencies on the verb itself. This is best done when using reverb on a return bus.

  5. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  6. A: My absolute favorite thing is to approach my mixes with an electronic feel and by that I mean applying the techniques used in electronic music to bands to really make a band's sound pop and stand out amongst others in their respective scenes.

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: I work with a combination of digital and analog equipment and enjoy working with outboard gear as well as in the box (on the computer). Synths are my absolute favorite, I have an extensive collection of classic analog and modern digital synths along with plenty of guitar effects pedals besides my gear rack and instruments.

  9. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  10. A: Most of my clients choose me to handle their entire post-production process which includes mixing and mastering. My mixing process goes deep when required, utilizing my outboard equipment to augment parts of you music, such as adding synth and instrument layers where need be before completing the mixing and mastering process. From there, my top clients like to discuss release and marketing strategies.
