We started recording a three track EP with Frank in January '16. And although it took a few months to finish he always took time. No half assing, no cutbacks, always aiming for the best possible result! We couldn't be happier with our recordings.
    Thanks a bunch, Frank!

Interview with Frank Boester

  1. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  2. A: "What's your pricing ?" - "How many tracks and instruments do you want to record" & "Could you give me a demo of the song you want to get mixed or produced ?"

  3. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  4. A: Get it right at the source ! Optimal microphone choice and placement is key.

  5. Q: What's your typical work process?

  6. A: There is no "typical" ! We'll meet or at least talk on the phone until we both know how I can benefit the client's needs and goals. Then we make a plan to set in action...

  7. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  8. A: I talked "Sticky Biscuits" from recording a recording a few songs for download purposes into producing their very first album. A landmark production for them and me which made us all very proud.

  9. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  10. A: Rufus Wainwright, Stevie Wonder, Ray LaMontagne, Harry Connick jr, Bob Clearmountain, George Martin, Brian Wilson, Phil Ramone, Mitchell Froom, Tchad Blake, Mack, Andrew Scheps, Rick Rubin, Gary Olazabal, Trevor Horn, Hugh Padgham, Glyn Johns, Ken Scott, Tony Visconti

  11. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  12. A: A soundtrack recording for an indie short film that is hoping to be accepted for the Berlin International Film Festival

  13. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  14. A: Digital: as much as I like vintage and analogue, I honestly don't see the need for tape anymore. It's not what you use, it's HOW you use it.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: To convice performers of what's needed - or when we better well leave it as it is and be done !

  17. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  18. A: I am not satisfied until you are. We'll get _your_ sound.

  19. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  20. A: Getting what's inside some else's head into the world of sound. Creating art = making lasting impressions.

  21. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  22. A: "we can probably do this inside an hour / one day"

  23. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  24. A: What did you like most in your previous productions ? What did you miss so far and aspire to achieve this time sound wise ? Do you have a demo ? ;-)

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: I chose this rather late, the long way round. But it was a long time coming and I'm not giving it up ever again.

  27. Q: How would you describe your style?

  28. A: Well, have a listen on soundcloud or www.behindthecouchstudio.com

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: Rufus Wainwright - his songwriting is amazing and intriguing. And he is always going the extra mile production wise.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: My lifelong love for music, based in decades of collecting and listening. My ear and taste, my good judgement paired with my friendly, persuasive self.

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: Set in massive living room ("behind the couch"), I've learned that it isn't necessary to seperate yourself from the performer. Something I have in common with Sylvia Massy, I found...

  35. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  36. A: No job is common, I found. Small jobs, complex jobs... you never know what you're gonna get (Forest Gump)
