I am a recording, mixing and mastering engineer based on Buenos Aires, Argentina with more than 15 years of experience in audio and music production as well as teaching. Director of "La Garra Estudio".

I provide remote mixing and mastering services, and I focus my work on giving every artist exactly what they are looking for. I believe every mix is unique, and every project must sound original and be a reflection of its creator.

The main reason I work in audio production is that I am passionate about bringing technical and artistic solutions for every musician, and becoming part of the team that every artist needs to take their music to the level they dessire.

I will provide a professional service, with very clear comunication, respectfully attending your needs and working side by side with you to deliver a professional sounding mix that reflects the essence of your art.

Along with every mix and/or master, you will get a ful backup of your sessions for you to keep, as well as the final masters in every format needed (Wav, mp3, flac, etc...)

Revisions can be made online via meets/zoom + audiomovers for audio streaming, or offline via email. Whatever suits you best.

Interview with Santiago Liñares

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The movie I am mixing the music for just got selected to participate in the Berlin Film Festival. I recorded and mixed audio for a Full 150 musicians Orchestra in the biggest theatres in Buenos Aires (Coliseo, CCK, Opera, etc...) in shows for more than 2000 people for the UN (United NAtions) I teach audio production for students that are now working and making aliving out of what they learnt in class.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: At the moment, mixing music for a movie, producing and mixing 5 different records, and teaching 10 casses a week.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not yet.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I love analog. I preffer digital. We can all agree on analog audio sounding deep, warm and overall, awesome! But unless you get to work with VERY HIGH END equipment, i don´t see the point on leaving the digital realm, where you can preserve the quality of audio with no degradation.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: That I will deliver a mx / master that best reflects their personality and artistic view. And that I wil be at their service throughout the process for delivery, explanations and suggestions. Also,the mis will sound great!

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I am passionate about audio and music, and I love to bring technical and artistic solutions to musicians so they can focus on making great music.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: What is your delivery time? 3 - 5 days, depending on the amount of work booked on the studio at the time. Will you copy the sound of the reference track? NO. I will make a unique mix for you, taking into account the style of mixing the reference uses (balance, stereo fied, amount and type of fx, etc...) Do you make revisions? Yes! I work until the artist is happy with the song, within reasonable limits pre established beforhand.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Mixing a song isn´t about making a bad song good, or fix a bad recording. Mixing a song is about finding a sonic identity for the track, balancing it´s elemtns and making it transcend.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Is this your first song? Do you know what to expect from a mix? Do you have a deadline? Do you know the difference between a mixed song and a mastered song? What style of mx do you want for your song? Do you have a reference? Is the song finished or are you still recording new tracks to add during the mixing process?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Ask all the questions you need, be clear on expectations, references, deadlines, and everything you think your engineer needs to know. Also, manage realistic expectations. No drums recorded with a single mic will wound like the Black Album, and there is no plugin to give an average singer the groove Bruno Mars have. With that in mind, be open to work alongside your mixing engineer to get the best resut possible.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Easy! A laptop, an antelope audio interface, a pair of genelc monitors, sony headphones and a VERY VERY VERY larg antena to get internet connetion :P

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I have been working in audio for 17 years now. I have a degree on recording and audio production from TECSON (Buenos Aires), and i studied music with a variety of teachers (guitar, drums, piano, singing) I work full time as an indepent producer, mixing and mastering engineer in my own studio, as well as a session musician, FOH engineer, Stage manager and music composer.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style regarding audio: Balanced, clean. focused on dynamics, punchy and exciting. My style regarding artists: always oriented in giving the client what they need, bringing a positive attitude to the table and being easy to work with.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Ricky Martin, for his professionalism, his capacity to adapt to many genres, his willingess to work with people who master skills he doesn´t,and because he is a very talented artist with great songs.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: The song comes first. Always. Focus on a great melody, a nice arrangement, a god beat. The amp you use, the mic you recorded with or the drums you play are no where near as imprtant as the song. Also, do your best to bring value and positivity to the people you work with.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Rock, pop, acoustic, folk, orchestral, and urban music

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Algon with my audio skills, my srtongest skill is working with every artist as an individual, focusing on their needs, providing a work enviorment based on their needs.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I focus on bringing out the emotion the song wants to generate by bringing balance, clarity and excitement with a very artistic way of percieving music, with atention to details, good taste and technical skils.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: First, an interview or chat with the artist to define goals, deadlines, reference tracks, and to get to know the artist´s perspective of the song. Once the tracks are in the session, check phase, gain staging of tracks, clean noise and pops if needed, and everything regarding technical preparation before mixing the song. If asked by the artist, I would also edit the tracks before mixing (time align, vocal tuning, etc..) Then start mixing the song start to finish, and leave it resting until at least the next day, to listent to it with fresh ears and clear head, and make adjustments. After that, send it to the artist for revisions and corrections before mastering.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My current studio set up is a simple and straightforward system for In The Box mixing and mastering. I run an Audient ID14 MKII as my audio interface, along with a Focusrite 18i20 for extra inputs when (rarely) needed for tracking. VXT 6 Monitors, Sony MDR7506 headphones, A variety of extra headphone for reference check (sennheiser, akg, audio-technica), an Icon Platform M+ controller for mixing A peavy 6505 guitar amp and Hartke HD150 bass amp for reamps, if needed and a variet of Miccrophones (AT4050s, RE20, E609, SM57s, SM58s, Beta 52, Cascade Elroy, E835, Samson C02)

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Colt Capperune, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ricky Martin, Miranda!, Ezequiel Morfi.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I mostly do mixing and mastering. I also produce and compose for artists, and teach audio production. I also do live FOH and recording, and work as stage manager.
