Interview with Jelinda Hill

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I’m especially proud of my work with Maverick City Music and the Sunday Service Collective. I recorded and arranged background vocals that helped shape the live sound's energy and emotion. It reminded me how powerful unity and creativity can be when serving something bigger than yourself.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m currently working on my upcoming single “Have Your Way”, while also collaborating on background vocal arrangements and custom vocal projects for clients across multiple genres.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not yet, but I love collaborating with talented producers, engineers, and musicians who value quality and integrity.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital for workflow and flexibility. With today’s plugins and interfaces, I can achieve warmth, clarity, and consistency while maintaining creative control anywhere I record.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise professional communication, high-quality stems, and performances that sound authentic, emotive, and industry-ready. Always to be delivered with care and excellence.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love the moment a song comes alive; the moment when the right vocal take captures exactly what the songwriter felt. Helping someone’s vision come to life by making it timeless and clear.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Most ask, “Can you match my tone or style?” Absolutely! I specialize in adapting my tone and phrasing to each artist’s unique sound while preserving the emotion's authenticity.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That vocalists just “show up and sing.” In reality, vocalists are musicians too! Great vocals take arrangement, emotion, and precision. Every layer, blend, and tone is intentional to serve the story.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I usually ask about the vision, emotion, and purpose behind the song. What message do you want listeners to feel? I also confirm the key, tempo, and any reference tracks before recording.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Look for someone who not only sings well but truly understands the heart of your song. Communication, emotional connection, and reliability are just as important as vocal skills.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My guitar, mic, interface, computer, and my UE-7 custom in-ears!

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I’ve been singing and arranging professionally for over 10 years. My background began in worship and live performance, later expanding into studio work, songwriting, and creative production. Over the years, I’ve collaborated with artists like Maverick City Music, DOE, Tye Tribbett, Leeland, William McDowell, and the Sunday Service Collective—and I’m still growing and evolving with every project.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is soulful, dynamic, and intentional—a blend of Gospel power, R&B smoothness, and Pop clarity. Every vocal I record aims to sound honest and spirit-led, whether it’s a quiet harmony or a powerful lead.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I’d love to work with Jon Bellion or PJ Morton! They blend soul, creativity, and storytelling in ways that inspire me. Their production choices always push boundaries while staying heartfelt and intentional.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Always focus on emotion before perfection. A technically flawless vocal means little if it doesn’t make people feel something. Capture the heart first and polishing comes second.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I mostly work on Gospel, CCM, R&B, Soul, and Pop, but I love experimenting with other genres like Acoustic, Country, and Cinematic music. I enjoy projects that carry emotion and meaning, no matter the style.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is vocal versatility and arranging. I can adapt my tone, texture, and dynamics to fit any genre while building rich, cohesive harmonies that bring songs to life.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring emotion, excellence, and intentionality. My goal is to make every vocal feel alive by capturing the message behind the lyrics and translating it into a performance that connects deeply with listeners. Whether it’s power or subtlety, I focus on making each take feel real.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Once I receive your reference track, key, and notes, I analyze the song's emotion and direction before tracking. I record multiple takes, build harmonies and ad-libs, and then review everything for tone and blend. You’ll receive a preview before I export and deliver the final, ready-to-mix stems.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I record with a Shure SM7B microphone paired with a Cloudlifter and Universal Audio Volt 476P interface for clean, warm tone. I monitor using UE-7 custom in-ear monitors and record on a 2024 MacBook Pro running Logic Pro X (v11.2.1) with Native Instruments plugins and effects. My setup ensures professional, studio-quality vocals with clarity and depth.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by artists and producers who merge excellence with authenticity such as Jon Bellion, PJ Morton, DOE, Tye Tribbett, H.E.R., Jazzmine Sullivan, and Kirk Franklin. I admire how they craft sounds that are both creative and spiritually or emotionally impactful.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I provide lead and background vocals, vocal arrangements, and songwriting across Gospel, CCM, R&B, and Pop. Most clients come to me for rich harmonies, soulful tone, and layered vocal production that make their songs sound full and professional.
