Interview with Waive Audio

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Actually one of my favorite setups was a hybrid one: The Neve Genesys Black console that could run along with Pro Tools or Logic. And control both, software and the analog preamps from it. Just wonderful. If I had to choose one tho, I'd go for digital for the ability to easily recall and versatility to move between systems.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: What I love the most about my work, is the fact that no project is ever the same. it is a constant growing experience and it's just so much fun.

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: everything can be solved in post-production.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: My style is daring and eclectic.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: If I had the opportunity, I would like to work side by side with those artists who inspired me to be what I am today.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: At university, we had several professors in classes (mixing, recording, sound design) who always put their "signature sound" on their work, they told me never to be afraid to experiment because that makes your sound unique. I would say the same to you.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: The most requested projects are pop, rock, electronic and urban music. although we always enjoy working with projects of other genres and even music for TV and film scoring.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: Creative problem solving... our engineering & musical background allows us to take pretty much any musical challenge and have great results. We don't like working with just one or two genres, but using our skillset to bring new ideas to whatever project we're currently working on.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: I'm always look forward to experiment in every step of the process. When an artist looks for a fresh sound to bring to their music, we always have tons of fun while working and the results are so satisfying to listen to.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: The first thing we do is to understand as deeply as possible your needs and vision, typically, we set up a meeting. Afterwards, we make a price quote custom made to your project. Once we establish the dates and specifications, we start working on the project while exchanging ideas and updates along the process. After the finishing touches and completing the payment, we send you the finished work with the corresponding format and files.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: We work alongside different specialized studios for our different needs. For music production we use top of the line gear (SSL & Neve Consoles, Neumann/Telefunken mics, Focusrite/API preamps) in collaboration with Estudios Noviembre in Mexico City. For Film and TV, we work with Estudios Churubusco (They have great working spaces optimized for THX and surround mixes). And most of the composition and arrangement work is done at our offices and studio (Waive Audio)

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: I really look up to artists that push the limits to what is possible. My musical taste is weird, but I listen to a very wide range of artists, from Mussorgsky, Beethoven, Stravinsky from the classical and romantic period, to Pink Floyd, Rush, Led Zepellin from rock classics, to contemporary artists as Muse, Flume, Tame Impala, Parcels, The 1975 and so on. These are some of the names that keep teaching and inspiring me.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: People come to us usually when they are in need of a producer that has experience in the process of recording and releasing a song from the very first steps (such as Songwriting and Arrangement) all the way to the Mastering and Legal concerns they might have. I personally enjoy the creative part of developing and creating a unique sound according to the personality of the artists we work with.
