Interview with Triple State
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Always proud, if you're not proud, re-do it, I guess? nah, just kidding, sometimes it just doesn't work out, right?
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Multiple things haha, working on my own songs mostly... trying to figure out a new album I've been working on for quite a while!
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Fingal Grünbauer. My brother actually! He's doing an amazing job at providing you with playing your piano pieces!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: For me digital. When an idea pops up in my mind, it's all about getting that idea on a project as fast as possible before the idea goes away. This works digitally the best for me.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Satisfaction. If you are not happy with the first sample I provide you with of your job request, then you get to choose to 'fire' me!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The wide variety of music I get to work with.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Do you have any samples? Do you make music? What are reasons not to hire you? I've made a SoundCloud playlist with most of my music. There's also a bunch of music available on Spotify under the artist name Triple State. Reasons not to hire me would be, if your expecting acoustic play from me.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception would be, that I'm going to play guitar.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Tell me your story. What is your history with music. I'd like to get familiar with a prospective client to see if I can mean something for them.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Don't be too formal. Jokes are welcome. When providing me with your song for mastering, the best thing to do is to provide me with the story behind the song/track/album/ep. If you don't provide me with any background information, I will decide on my own and you might end up being either really happy or you will use all 3 revisions... A song won't do it without a story.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Gear? I'd just need one piece of gear. An airplane, to get back to my studio as soon as possible because I'd be missing some job requests... duhh...
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Music career started simply with guitar lessons, 7 years old. Later I started producing and followed educations into becoming a professional producer/audio engineer.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: If dubstep could be called Funstep, then that would be my style! Always adding a little bit of humor to the song/track I'd make, without trying to.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Freddie Mercury. That's literally the only person where I've ever wanted to work with. Obviously it wouldn't happen. Why? His voice... it's just, I can't describe it. It's like Magic...
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: No rules, only advice. Applies to literally everything.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Dubstep, EDM.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: If I answer this, I'd say producing dubstep music because that's what I enjoy the most. Now, regarding the requests I've got, it seems that mastering songs/tracks is mostly desired. Maybe that has nothing to do with me...
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Myself. No seriously, it's all me... okey, coffee. There's always some coffee.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Really depends on the situation and the request. For mastering: most of the times I'd first listen to the song to get the "I randomly ran into this song, what do I think" feeling, then I'd read the comments and story behind the song (lyrics if there are any) and listen again while trying to step in the shoes of the creator. And after that I'd get to actual mastering.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio setup consists of a lovely pair of Yamaha HS7's which I've used for that amount of time were I can definitely say, I know my speakers! And a laptop, powered by Logic Pro X, to avoid monitor/screen reflections.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: All started with Queen and Freddie Mercury's voice, that somehow evolved into the love for dubstep and eventually combining classical with dubstep... Lovely ain't it?
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mostly I get asked to master songs, sometimes just one and sometimes entire albums. I offer 3 revisions, but usually actually only one or zero are used.
