Gremnir on SoundBetter

Sharing song and story for the eager and grim.

Gremnîr is a queer animist-pagan folk artist and music educator based in the San Francisco East Bay Area. Using an eclectic blend of Kargyraa throat singing, primal bodhrán percussion, and neoclassical cello, he shares original fantasy ballads and musical rituals that send listeners on vivid, dream-like journeys. As a solo performer he hopes to connect with listeners in cozy settings like the bards and skalds of old Scandinavian culture, while helping the audience revisit their heritage and understand themselves on a deeper psychological level.

He records with Logic and can promise a 1-2 day turnaround.

Interview with Gremnir

  1. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  2. A: Attention-grabbing contrast in orchestration, texture, and form, ancient sounds used in new ways.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: My second album, which will be released later in 2021. It's a blend of original fantasy ballads and musical rituals intended for the listeners to better connect with themselves and their "dark side."

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I deliver on what I'm hired to do, and exceed satisfaction for both parties.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: Collaboration toward a common goal. Community building with reliable people.

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: Is this a paying gig? If yes... What feelings are you striving to express in this project? What is the context/story behind it? How much expressive room are you giving to pursue the sound you want?

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: The gear won't be useful unless I have means of producing electricity. If there is none, I'd be content with my cello and voice alone.

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: I've been a professional musician since high school, which started in 2006.

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: Eivør Pálsdottir and Heilung. Eivør has a gorgeous voice and versatile background in jazz, opera, and the alternative singer-songwriter scene. Excellent use of instrumentation in her work as well. Heilung is wild and fierce in their avant-garde delivery of ancient concepts and sounds while using them in new ways, blending shamanism and rituals in a musical setting.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Follow a deadline to the letter.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: Dark/alternative folk

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: Professionalism. Cello performance and music-theory-based songwriting. Committing to a project. Exploring fullest potential of a song's/piece's vision.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: Cello - Rushad Eggleston, Giovanni Sollima and Yo-Yo Ma Songs and pagan folk sounds - Einar Selvik, Eivør Pálsdottir, FAUN, The HU and Heilung.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Dark cello instrumentals, sometimes with singing too. Throat/undertone singing as well, specifically khoomii.
