Interview with Diogo Soares (MadHouse Prods.)

  1. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  2. A: Electronic Music (especially Techno, Minimal and House) | Hip-Hop/Trap | Pop | Rock | Latin | Cinematics

  3. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  4. A: Boris Brejcha | Deborah De Luca | John Frusciante | Kenrick Lamar | Rick Rubin | Alan Parson | Dave Pensado | ...

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: What are the plans about the song (it's a single, it's for an album, an EP, for anything else)? What is the style? What message do you want to convey? What are the personality of the song/album? What characteristics do you think are the most important? Etc... Basically, all the details that can enhance and consolidate the artistic vision! The job of a producer/mixing engineer is also to bring the right things (that are already in the project) to the right places in the right quantities.

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Try to understand if the provider fits your necessities. He/She can be an amazing producer, mixing engineer (whatever) but may not be the best choice for your style, or to understand what you really want for the project.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: Since very young, I am enthusiast of music. First of all I am a music listener and that's actually my favourite job. Then I started playing guitar in my teens. I played in some bands, but I wanted to be involved in all stages of creating a song, so I started to produce and mix on my own. I decided to study Music Sciences in the university in Lisbon to increase my knowledge and also allowed me some collaborations. Besides that I am also a Techno/House DJ. And now I'm growing my own studio/productions and here we are.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: A controlled chaos! Exactly on the tightrope! Which in turn brings danger and intensity (capable of provoking the most distinct emotions)! However subtle, with detail.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: Chaos before the main part of a song (might be a Chorus or a Drop) to bring more impact, as long as chaos dissipates in the main part and becomes cohesive and very clear. So, basicly tension and release associated with the dynamics of the song is one of the most important aspects of a great song!

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: Curiosity. My curiosity makes me restless, always searching for new ways and forms, always trying to bring something new to the table, not being satisfied with the pre-established. And all of that gives me another powerful skill - Creativity!

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: I bring the vision of the artist with clarity and personality. I bring creativity to the table to fill the gaps, that little details that make a difference between a good song and a great song!

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: Full Productions: I always start with a meeting to know better the project, what's expected, the artistic vision... Basicly, all the details necessary to run the collaboration the best way. I produce all the song (composition, instrumentation, arragement, editing, etc...) - 1-7 days Then I mix the song to balance and clean (make it clearer and with more character) - 1-3 days And, finally, I master the song (normally in collaboration) - 1-2 days All of this is interspersed with revisions (a good communication is one of the most important tools to achieve the best result).

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: Mixing | Producing (specially Hip-Hop Beats and Electronic pieces to ads/commercials, etc...)

  23. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  24. A: My debut EP as a techno producer. Some full productions with some local artists (Hip-Hop). Starting my journey in remote work (online - freelancing).

  25. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  26. A: A mix (pun intended) of the best of both worlds.

  27. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  28. A: Total commitment to the poject! And great sound quality!

  29. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  30. A: The music, of course! And I'm my own boss!

  31. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  32. A: That my job is merely technical. Wrong, my part in the project is also creative! But a creativity that serves the artist's vision.
