Malcom Owen-Flood on SoundBetter

I produce, mix, and master rock music. I've had over a dozen tracks hit radio, including a top 40 Billboard Rock hit. Collectively, songs I have worked on have over two million streams on Spotify. If you want huge sounding tracks that translate to radio, I'm your guy. Let's get your music in front of the people that need to hear it!

Hey, my name is Malcom Owen-Flood and I'm hear to make sure your songs sound as great as they possibly can.

I've had the chance to work with a ton of bands, in multiple genres, and have seen a lot of success over my career, both personally, and for the artists I work with. My hope is that I can help you reach that success as well!

I specialize in huge, bombastic, rock mixes that really have an impact on their listeners. I want the emotion of the song to get through while maintaining a polished and professional result that will hold up if presented to labels, management, or radio.

And at the end of the day, I want this process to be fun for you! This is about taking the vision in your head and making it a reality, using my skills as the vehicle that gets you there!

I'm looking forward to working with you. Shoot me a message and we can get started!

It was great working with Malcom. He was very responsive to my requests and was able to make edits on some fine details. We worked together on a rock song that I was having trouble pulling together and he was able to polish it up! Highly recommend.

Malcom did an amazing job re-mixing and re-mastering our latest song! We were once again stunned by the quality of his work. The final result sounds tight, clear, energetic, professional... Outstanding job! Moreover Malcom is such a nice guy, working with him is always a pleasure. It was our second cooperation with Malcom and definitely not the last one. Extremely highly recommended!

Malcom is an amazing Producer who did a great job re-mixing and re-mastering 2 of our tracks! It was a real pleasure working with him. Malcom came with great ideas to improve our songs. He has a great ear and is very friendly, reactive, professional. Final result of his work was beyond our greatest expectation. We will definitely work again with him in the near future and highly recommend him to anyone looking for a professional Producer that can get your art to the next level.

Malcom mixed & mastered our first two singles and we couldn't be happier with the results! In particularly, our latest single "Peppermints" was recorded DIY and was completely blown away with what he was able to do with the tracks we sent him! We cant recommend him enough to mix, master, or produce any project. Excited to work with him again

Malcom is the man! I work as a session musician, which has given me the pleasure of seeing Malcom work in several projects, studios and in different roles. Regardless of what capacity he's working in, he consistently brings great energy to the process, and has a brilliant way of leaving room for the artist's choices and voice, while still bringing his own expertise and guidance. His catalogue of work shows how good his mixing is, but his way of working with people is what makes him an excellent producer to boot.

It was such a great experience working with Malcom. His attention to detail and creative style really helped take our song to the next level. We learned so much by working with him and have been able to apply that to our songwriting process. Great communication, workflow, creativity, and patience - a great person to work with at any stage in your band's career. We'll definitely be working with Malcom on future projects.

You will not find a better person to work with than Malcom. He is easy going, extremely knowledgable, and an utmost professional. His mixes sound fantastic every time, his ear is phenomenal at getting that perfect rock sound. His professionalism and expertise is matched only by his kindness, positive disposition, and genuine enthusiasm that he brings to every project. Theres really not enough good things I can say about Malcom, he should be everybody's first choice

Above all, Malcom is an absolute professional. Super easy to work with, and he has a lot of knowledge of how to transfer energy into recordings whilst still keeping them radio friendly and punchy! He's not afraid to take you outside your comfort zone as a producer, either. Many of the techniques he used in the studio with me last year have stuck, so much so that I'd say he helped me realise the sound I should be aiming for in total. Can't reccomend enough - especially if you want punchy, fat, tight rock tracks that are ready to hit hard!

Interview with Malcom Owen-Flood

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: So much! I've worked with artists from 7 countries this year (so far) and it seems like that number will just keep growing!

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Benedikt Hain - Great engineer and mix engineer. Especially if you are looking for a punk sound!

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both! Why limit yourself to just one?

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: The music!

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: LEARN to use your gear! They have those knobs for a reason! Understand your gear and you will start to learn how to control your sound. Also - tune WAY more often then you think you need to. It's harder to record an in-tune guitar than you'd think!

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: Mixing rock music.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: A realistic idea of how the outside world will perceive the song. I always think about how it will translate to the outside world and the listener.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: It depends on what the "work" is! The song comes first!

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: I generally work out of The Woodshop Recording Studio, which is a fully equipped production studio in the woods of Cowichan Valley, BC, Canada. We have a large live room, a great isolation booth, and a control room that is to die for. I work on Protools HD but have experience crafting music in Abelton Live as well. I listed a link to the studios gear page in my profile for anyone to check out. I also have my own personal mixing and mastering studio that I just finished building at the beginning of this year!

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: I am a big fan of a lot of the current rock productions (i.e.. Rival Sons, Royal Blood, Band of Skulls, The Black Keys, Big Wreck). They are all so punchy and thick - something that I try to include in my work. Pretty rock songs? nah! Lets grime it up and turn some heads! I am also very into RnB and electronic acts like The Postal Service and The Weeknd. You can learn a lot from how they layer textures. Again, it is something I try to keep in mind - everything has their own place in the mix.

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: Most commonly, I act as a full on Producer, Mixer, and Engineer - at the same time! However, with the online age in full swing, I have begun to do more and more mixing for clients who need to finish their song off with a nice and punchy mix and master!

  23. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  24. A: Spent a day with a pop band called Lovecoast recently. We did a quick one day recording of The Jackson 5's "I Want You Back". We tracked almost everything live and it turned out phenomenal. They went on to win $5000 as a result of that song immediately after!

  25. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  26. A: That they will love what they hear.

  27. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  28. A: Q:How do I get my song on the radio? A: Lets try taking out the 8 minute guitar solo and focus on it being a radio single.

  29. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  30. A: I don't make bad performances sound great. I make great performances sound amazing.

  31. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  32. A: Examples of what they like, their timeline, and their vision.

  33. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  34. A: Listen to the samples!

  35. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  36. A: Corona, but they usually come in six packs. (sorry). My can't live without gear list is: Soundeluxe U195, Buzz Audio SOC 1.1, Daking FET Compressor, a copy of Valhalla Verb, and a good old SM57.

  37. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  38. A: I started recording my first album when I was about 15 or so. A few years went down the road and my work got the attention of producer Zak Cohen (Owner and Founder of The Woodshop Recording Studio). He offered for me to apprentice under him and the rest is history. I have been working out of that studio for about 6 years now.

  39. Q: How would you describe your style?

  40. A: Punchy.

  41. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  42. A: Matthew Good. His records have consistently been superb. His songwriting was made to be recorded (and thus turned into awesome audio).

  43. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  44. A: Rock (all the varieties of it). But blues, folk, pop, you name it and I'm into it.
