Me and Abbas connected about a year ago, and I was extremely impressed with his style, flavor and ability to blend sounds together to create the perfect feeling! That’s what music is about to me, creating a feeling, a vibe and he’s got it packed down! Definitely looking forward to working with him more in the future.

Interview with ABBAS KAUSAR

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Although, I know the question is in past tense, I'm actually most proud of the projects I'm currently working on. The music we create within our collective is exciting and fulfilling. I work primarily as a Producer, though I'm also involved in the writing and I'm being encouraged to sing again too. I've always thought of myself as forward thinking, especially musically, and I'm excited to have the opportunity to set the pace of the future of music with the Artists we write for.

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: In no particular order: MacBook, AKG USB Mic, Akai MPK Mini, Headphones and probably a little generator to get the island studio running.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: Disney and other upcoming projects with the Moonstone Collective.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: I ask about their mission - not only in regards to the project but also in their career and perhaps life. What's your message? What's your story?

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: Conversation - let's determine where we stand musically and how we can provide value to each other.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: I grew up in a cultural melting pot called London. The combination of western music and my eastern heritage has had a major influence on my style. I'm not afraid to be myself or step away from the norm. I draw naturally from my influences and I take the creative steps that I feel are necessary for the music alone.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: I would love to work with Jhene Aiko. Her style/sound is so otherworldly. I'd love to be a part of that energy and process. Other Artists include, H.E.R., 6lack, Summer Walker, Justin Timberlake - to name a few.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: MacBook Pro - running ProTools and Ableton Live. Hardware: Ableton Push II, Akai MPK II Mini, M-Audio Keyboard. Monitors: Yamaha HS7. Headphones: Neumann NDH 20. Microphone: Neumann TLM 102.

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: Not really a misconception. But I catch even those closest to me by surprise, with my versatility in abilities and styles. I'm not bound to any one particular role or style of music.

  19. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  20. A: I promise that I will display a high-level of communication and understanding. I put music first and check my ego in at the door, my primary goal is to provide value to your project.

  21. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  22. A: Music is an integral part of my life. I tell stories through melodies and sounds. The fact that I can share my story with others or even help others tell their stories, in this way, is definitely my favourite aspect of my job.

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: I don't like to label my music but 'usually': R&B-Soul, Pop and Hip-Hop, at times combined with the influence of my eastern heritage.

  25. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  26. A: Sound selection.

  27. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  28. A: Yes. Bianca 'Blush' Atterberry. Mastermind - to say the least.

  29. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  30. A: Both. Analog is pure and Digital is powerful.

  31. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  32. A: Take breaks, rest your ears and return to your music with a fresh perspective.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Value - through the knowledge of sound selection, sonics and most importantly prioritising the creative process.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I tune my ears to the understanding of the brief and during the process of my work I maintain communication with the client/team to establish the direction and/or creative input.

  37. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  38. A: "How much do you charge?" I do have average price ranges for various jobs, however I set these with the time-consumption element of the job in mind. My personal intent is to provide value and to perhaps find a musical relationship.

  39. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  40. A: I've been making music for over 15 years. I started off as a singer and found other avenues to express myself musically, through writing, producing, etc. I'd found my feet, so to speak, as a producer / sound-engineer. I began to educate myself in the field and connect with other musicians. Eventually, I found the mentors and opportunities that've allowed me to leave an imprint in MUSIC.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Production / Beat-Making, Recording, Mixing / Mastering, Post-Editing and Sound Design.

  43. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  44. A: Timbaland, Nate 'Danja' Hills, Marcella Araica, Jaycen Joshua, Rob Knox, James Fauntleroy, Bianca 'Blush' Atterberry.
