I'm here on SoundBetter to design your personal audio into a meaningful sound meditation. Through my formal training in music education/production, practical theology/spirituality, and digital storytelling, I have created and presented unique audio listening experiences to a wide variety of audiences in the United States & Spain.
I will sound design your personal audio into a sound meditation that will be useful for your personal reflection and deep engagement with your affective memory. This finished audio may be shared as an intimate gift for a loved one or serve as a personal memento that will inspire your daily life. You might also be looking to share this audio at a public listening event for a beloved community of yours. Remember that the source material will always come from your life and can be in the form of a voice memo, a cell phone/vhs home video or a field recording from your favorite location just to name a few examples. I'll get to know you, your sense of story related to this audio and how reimagining it will assist you in your personal life, career or critical engagement with your community.
I also create sound meditations for still images made by visual artists. These sound meditations serve to enhance visual thinking strategies in the viewer and promote discussion about the visual art.

I've had the pleasure of working with Jeff on several projects over the last 10 years. In all of the projects we have done, he always had a very well prepared and organized vision for what something needs to turn into musically. The music we have worked on always had a deep connection to various life experiences and Jeff was very open to explaining the significance of the music. His communication and empathy will be far more powerful in the creative process of helping people thru music and sound than any plugin out there. You will enjoy the journey with Jeff!
Jeff is always a pleasure to work with and he delivers the highest quality possible.
Jeffrey created an amazing audio accompaniment to an art piece of mine (How does it feel to be a ghost?) - it fit the image perfectly. He is such an open minded artist and will create a meaningful sound with your desired effect at its core. He was truly wonderful to work with.
Interview with Jeffrey Cobbold
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My audio journal project, "Becoming a Digital Humanist: An Autobiographical Nonlinear Digital Story" is one that I am especially proud of. The sound meditations I created for this audio journal show the range of my approaches for meditative audio. Please listen to tracks "Individuality", "Tradition", "Race", and "Love of God Audio Quotation Database", which can be found in the audio sample section.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I fully embrace both. I oscillate between the two and mix sonic elements.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise an audio listening experience that will help you discover or confront how you feel as opposed to telling you how you should feel.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That anyone can do what I do or that there is no specific process involved.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: 1. Why did you select this audio, video or still image to be designed into a sound meditation? 2. What is at stake for you in having this work done?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Our process works best when you have selected a piece of audio or a still image that means a great deal to you. The more you have invested in your selection, the better it will assist me in creating a sound meditation that will enhance or open up new meanings for you. I am also glad to give consultation on how to best use this audio within your daily life.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Lady Gaga. She has an amazing voice and an amazing story to tell about her self-care & development as an artist. I would love to create a sound meditation for her related to her journey.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I would recommend Johnny O as a mastering engineer. He has mastered a number of my audio projects with great success.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I became interested in experimental music in 2010 and my first work was entitled "A Journey for Peace", which I completed in 2011 (please listen to this in the audio sample section). I later began showcasing my experimental music in Spain from 2016 - 2019 while a graduate music student and professional artist. Most recently I have presented experimental music as installations and gallery pieces in my home state of New Jersey (U.S.A.)
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on experimental music, soundscape creation and manipulated field recordings. This work can also include use of the voice in the form of singing or spoken word.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Providing unexpected results for clients and giving them a fresh outlook on their lives through audio.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My process stems from my personal research of digital storytelling and my formal study of practical theology/spirituality. These areas bear heavily on my audio production process and direct my choices in sound design. It is a highly personal creative process of visual thinking, affective memory, active/guided listening and development of a connection to the autobiographical story the client shares with me.
