Interview with Laura Ava

  1. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  2. A: I'd love to work with Maren Morris. No matter whether she's singing a stripped-back song with her acoustic guitar, or powering through an upbeat pop track, her voice gives me chills.

  3. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  4. A: Let me know if you have any ideas in mind for a mood/theme or title. Also if you have any songs/artists you're particularly inspired by.

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: Always make a rough recording when you have a song idea. You can then use that as both a memory aid and a springboard to a more polished recording.

  7. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  8. A: On the songwriting front, currently Sara Bareilles, Raye Zaragoza, Phoebe Bridgers and Kacey Musgraves. I love how they all put their heart and soul into their music, and tell their stories through their lyrics.

  9. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  10. A: A track I wrote, recorded, performed and co-produced was selected as BBC Music Introducing in the East Midlands' Track of the Week. I was invited to the studio for a live interview about my music career and the song. The song was then played every day at BBC Radio Leicester, and I was invited for another live interview there. It was surreal to hear my song in the playlist, alongside Lewis Capaldi and other household names!

  11. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  12. A: BoomFox Productions, for vocals and/or production.

  13. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  14. A: I've worked with both, and I'm currently mostly digital.

  15. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  16. A: I know how much time and effort it takes to bring a song into the world. I'll dedicate my focus and skills to crafting your lyrics to help you achieve your goals. I'll also stay in touch with you throughout the project.

  17. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  18. A: I love being able to help you build or complete your song. It's a bonus that I get to be creative with different ways to express moods, themes and ideas through lyrics.

  19. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  20. A: Usually about turnaround time. The average time is no longer than a week, and I often much sooner. If you have a deadline sooner, please get in touch.

  21. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  22. A: I always like to understand what your project aim is, so I can help you achieve your goals. I'll also ask if there's any songs or artists that have inspired your song, or you more generally.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: A notepad, a pen, a small audio recorder, my ukulele and a tuner!

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Versatile! I'm most influenced by pop and singer-songwriter, but I love working in a range of genres.

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: Starting with a blank page or just a few words of an idea, and transforming that into a fully fledged set of lyrics.

  29. Q: What's your typical work process?

  30. A: I'll first ask you some questions to learn more about your goals for your project. From there, I'll get to work, and keep in touch until the lyrics are complete.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: 20+ years of songwriting training and experience, particularly specialising in lyrics. Plus a passion for crafting the best words to fit the mood or theme for your song.

  33. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  34. A: I craft emotionally relevant lyrics to build or complete your song. Whether it's for an upbeat pop track, or a reflective folk/acoustic song, I'm comfortable working in several genres. I'm experienced in writing songs for artists, and writing for sync placements.

  35. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  36. A: I started writing songs over 20 years ago, before taking my Bachelors degree (with honours) in Music Composition and Technology. After that, I worked professionally as a musician and singer-songwriter. Years later, I took a career break and returned to writing, recording and releasing music as an artist in 2018. Since then, I've taken further professional training and developed my skills as a songwriter.

  37. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  38. A: I'm writing and recording my own artist songs, and writing for other artists. Plus writing numerous sync songs for film and TV.

  39. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  40. A: Mostly pop, pop-rock, singer-songwriter and folk/acoustic. I've also worked on indie-pop, country-pop and even trip hop tracks, so I'm open to several different genres (and combinations!)

  41. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  42. A: Logic Pro X, Audient iD44, Aston Origin, PreSonus FaderPort 8
