Interview with Johnny Neff [ØMC]
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My track "Pills Fix Me", featuring Cat Grace, was really what got the ball rolling for my taste in pop music production. I don't even know how to describe the song, it's like this very industrial mechanical sounding track; think I just came up with a new genre. I did a lot sampling from factories to get its industrial sound. Couldn't have been more proud how it turned out.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: It brings me great joy to help bring the artist's vision to life. Producing is a very collaborative process.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I enjoy working with people who are open to new ideas and are just as enthusiastic about music as I am!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always. Have. A. Good. Writer.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill goes beyond making music. It is the ability of being able to listen to other people, be open to feedback, and keep learning along the way. This is absolutely crucial. I've seen many people turn down constructive criticism and it can damage their growth.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Great question, my main influences are The Weeknd, Ariana Grande, Melanie Martinez, Halsey, Troye Sivan, Allie X.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I'm currently most interested in producing pop music for my clients, it's the genre I'm most fascinated by.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Errrrrr it's all digital these days... so I guess my laptop, mic, speakers... cheese and crackers. That makes 5 right?
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I like writing pretty lush songs, although I secretly enjoy doing some scandalous type tracks here and there. For the most part, my style is very synth-pop orientated, just made with a contemporary mindset.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Ariana Grande! Her voice is like liquid gold haha
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop music, synth-pop
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Here is a breakdown of my work process, 1. Writing the chord progression and melody (this can also be paired with figuring out the beat) 2. Writing the lyrics (so I can get sense of tone for the song) 3. Gathering instruments that I will work with (I have a large collection of VST synths, pianos, pads, guitars, etc) 4. Producing the track (bringing the elements together, this is the main part of production) 5. Mixing (Adjusting each instrument accordingly with equalization, reverb, delay, etc) 6. Mastering (Bringing out the clarity and loudness)
