Tarek Zarroug on SoundBetter

Professional music producer, beat-maker and sound engineer based in Cologne (GER), mainly focused on electronic, experimental and hip-hop genres. I released on labels like Iboga Records / PIAS / Dangervisit / Moon Blvd. and worked for artists like Archive and Jules Ahoi. Simply drop me a message and we will bring your music to life!

My musical background started around 20 years ago as a drummer in several bands. I own a degree from the ArtEZ Conservatory of Arts with main focus on jazz and popular music. Since then I developed my qualities as a music producer with a massive interest in analogue and modular synthesizers. Among other things I created remixes for well known artists Archive and Jules Ahoi. Next to production services I release electronic music under the alias "Taroug" and "Bellchild".

As a music producer I work in a broad variety of styles but my strengths lie in alternative, experimental, art-pop and electronic music as well as lo-fi and hip-hop music. I'm always open minded to any other kind of music and would love to discuss this individually with you.

As a sound engineer I bring years of experience to make your song sound outstanding and release ready.

No matter where you're from, what you need and what your skills level is, I'm here to help you.

One of the highlights of this pretty shitty year (stay vigilant!)) has been meeting and working with Tarek. He's smart and forthcoming with his ideas but never dismisses yours. He has no end of talent for mining great tones and interesting melodies and as such, he creates soundscapes that go beyond a simple "remix"- they become a whole other amazing piece unto themselves. Obviously, I can't recommend him strongly enough. He's just really great at what he does.

What can I say about Tarek? Or more like where do I begin? He is a thoughtful producer who really listens to the projects he takes on and cares about their outcome. His input and ideas are excellent and he'll likely surprise you with how good they actually sound when you hear them. And when he does deliver his roughs for your thoughts he is receptive to collaboration. Tarek's turn around time is great but he lets you know up front what his schedule accurately is. I look forward to working with him again.

Interview with Tarek Zarroug

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: If you are looking for music production in the fields of Dubstep watch out for Daniel Karelly here on Soundbetter. He's the man!

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: I'm especially proud to be part of international known artist Archive's latest album release. It's a remix album with remixes from Darkstar, Vessels and many more, celebrating their 25th anniversary. I am very happy that I was also allowed to contribute a remix.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: Right now I'm working on several remixes for clients from US and Germany.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: The best of both worlds. Analog for sound design reasons and because I prefer to have that machine in my fingers while I'm twisting knobs. Digital for recording, arranging and mixing as it gives me more freedom in general.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I only take on a job if I can guarantee to fulfil the client's wishes and deliver a result that everyone is happy with. Otherwise, I am happy to recommend colleagues who might be better suited for the job.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: That's totally individual.

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Write down what you really expect from a provider and always try to remain realistic. Take your time to check out several offers and evaluate carefully. And keep in mind that taking a risk sometimes could lead in to something wonderful, so do not approach the matter too cerebrally.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: In general I work in multiple genres and it often depends on the needs of the client. When I have the freedom to implement more of my own style I would describe it like art-pop / experimental / techno. I love wobbly chords and creating rhythmic textures out of recorded organic sounds. I love to experiment a lot to create new unique sounds and that affects my musical style a lot.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: My modular synth (if thats one piece of gear, haha), a sequencer, a mixer, headphones.

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I have started out as a professional drummer after graduating from the ArtEZ Conservatory of Arts in 2014 and I still am doing this for several projects. From then on, I fell more and more in love with electronic music production and synthesizers. I learned a lot in the coming years and since 2018 I offer professional music production services.

  21. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  22. A: There are a lot of great artists I'd love to work with, but if I had to choose one, that's definitely Thom Yorke from Radiohead. He's been such a massive inspiration for decades and I love his music so much. For me he is a genius in finding the right balance between complexity and simplicity in music and his understanding of sound design is unsurpassable for me personally.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: One thing I love is resampling tracks through analogue tape machines. Simply double the speed of the track and transpose it up an octave. Then record this to a tape machine and play it back with half speed. This results in a more lush, dirty and vintage sounding track and can help especially to bring life and character in to VST synths.

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: Alternative Pop, Experimental Pop, Techno, Techhouse, Organic House, Downtempo, Hip-Hop, Lo-Fi Music

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: My strongest skill is bringing life and emotion in to a song. I have an affinity for musical aesthetics and try to reach this through very picky and detailed sound design. I'm also a graduated jazz drummer and this background helps me a lot to be unique in my music production

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: LOVE

  31. Q: What's your typical work process?

  32. A: This totally depends on the project. When I start a new track I generally noodle around with any of my hardware synths and effects and record everything. Then I listen back and cut out what I mostly like as a starting point for the track. Then I build around it, stone for stone. Painting it, repainting it, breaking it down and build it up again. Unique sound design is always very very important to me. While remixing tracks the work process is similar but slightly different as I always try to first experiment with the stems I receive and create something totally new out of it.

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: My studio is a home studio setup where I can professionally produce, mix and master mainly electronic based music. I'm a synth geek and so I have various analogue hardware synths all around me to find the right sound for any needs. In the center is my Macbook Pro where everything floats into Ableton Live for further processing.

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: Thom Yorke, Apparat, David August, James Blake, Jon Hopkins, John Bonham, Mark Guiliana, Brian Blade, Flying Lotus, Arca, Modeselektor, Fjaak, Stian Westerhus

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: The most common types of work I do for clients is full music production, beatmaking and remixing their tracks. All can include mixing and mastering, according to the wishes of the client. Production can be from the very first note up to finishing and polishing a clients track and make it sound competitive and release ready.
