It’s hard to find a producer as passionate as Ed Stokes. The key to writing a fantastic song is a mixture of good ideas and enthusiasm. Ed offers both of these and I will be working with him again in the near-future for sure.

Ed’s work ethic is like no other. He’s constantly working at his craft and is one of the most talented producers I know. I’ve seen Ed progress over the years that I’ve worked with him and his equipment is always being updated. You really get more than you pay for because Ed’s equipment is top of the range industry gear, if you want to sound like a star, you need him mixing you through thousands of pounds worth of equipment. The session is cosy and laid back, Ed likes to listen to a reference track to really gain an understanding of your vibe. Trust no other mix but Ed’s!

Extremely professional! I came to Ed with a song I had written called 'Tequila' and he tuned it into something I never could of imagined. I am so pleased with the result of the production, mix and master. As well as amazing producer and mixing engineer he is also a genuine lovely guy to work with.

Interview with Ed Stokes

  1. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  2. A: Producing and mixing are the main types of work I do for my clients.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: Bringing out the artists thoughts and direction into a reality.

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Trust me with your work. Im not here to work for you I'm here to work with you.

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: Lots of different style from commercial pop to Indie.

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: Attention to detail and my ears.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: Professional standard mixes. Ready for release.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: Less is more.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: Mixing: Once I receive files I import everything into Logic Pro, and get a pretty decent rough mix happening. Then I confirm with the client that we're either good to go, or there's something missing or that needs to be fixed. I then put the mix on my schedule and either send it the day I mix it, or sometimes give it a night to finish with fresh ears. I then shoot this first pass to clients, and then if they have notes I recall and address as needed. Turn around depends on my calendar, and the size of the project but is usually around 1 week start to finish. Production: I generally listen to the song and any references you want the final outcome to be I will then make a start and send a rough example of the direction. Once I've confirmed everything is good to go, I schedule it in and hit it usually within a few days.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: I like to bring out the emotion in the song. I want the listener to feel like they are in the song from start to finish. I also try to find the core of the music and make sure it's presented in the best light. Often it's the vocal, sometimes it's the beat, but I think my strongest asset is my ability to do what the song needs and of course what the artists wants. Its very important to listen to the artist. Whether it's a bright polished pop mix, a lo-fi indie mix, or a clean acoustic song. Clients most often tend to compliment my vocal sound, and I do tend to build a mix around a vocal.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Mac, U87, 1176 compressor, La2a Compressor, UAD Interface

  21. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  22. A: Both. I like blending vintage with a modern sound.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: Jake Gosling, Greg Wells and Andrew Scheps

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: I use Logic Pro x and Protools. My Audo interface is a Universal Audio Twin Mk2. For vocals i use a Neumann U87Ai running into a 1073lb Pre amp then into a Neve 543 Mono compressor. I have a long list of plugins: UAD, Waves and Soundtoys etc..
