Interview with Woodmere Mixing Services
Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
I mixed a song for the Indaba music website. A mixing contest sponsored by Dave Pensado.
Analog or digital and why?
I like both but now I have just Digital. I hope to branch out and do a hybrid mixing style offering the best of both worlds.
What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
That the mixes will sound as good as music on the radio or that has been mastered. That is a separate step that comes after the mixing process. MAstering polishes the mix and makes it louder to compete with radio airplay.
What type of music do you usually work on?
All types. But I love r&b, jazz, pop, christian, rock and singer songwriter/Folk.
What's your strongest skill?
My love of music. It drives me to make a song sound as best as I can. Even if I have weak material, I dive in and try to make it bigger and better than it would be on it's own.
What do you bring to a song?
25 years of music production and listening to how music has developed.
What's your typical work process?
Load all tracks and listen. Try to get a feel for where the song is going. Get the lead vocal sounding great than move to the drums and bass to make sure everything is gelling. Then I move to the main accompaniment instrument(s) and make sure they fit well with the vocals. Then on to the rest of the instruments.
Tell us about your studio setup.
I use Pro Tools for mixing. I have UAD and Slate Digital plug-Ins as well as the stock plug-ins from Pro Tools. I use Ableton Live for music production.
What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
I am inspired by EDM, R&B production and current Pop production. The music production has become more energetic and more vibrant.
Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
Mainly mixing their music.
