Leonardo Bonetti on SoundBetter

Composer, musician, improviser. My specialty is working with real and deferred time DSP on live drumming and percussions. Solid jazz drums training.Producing computer music pieces, algorithmic composition, acousmatic, jazz/rock music, where I developed ideal skills for live electronics in any context, sound design audio editing and post production.

• First of all, hybrid musician here!
• If you're looking for a non standard drummer, I offer something slightly different than live drum tracks production only, as my competences come from a multifaceted education both in Jazz drums and electroacoustic music composition : acquiring the sound from the drums, or from any source and transforming it thru complex real/non real time DSP algorithms according to my customer's needs and vision is my passion and distinctive skill!
• Live drummer and percussionist for JAZZ, FUNK, FREE/OPEN PERCUSSION, HIP HOP, ROCK, POP, IMPROVISATION, REGGAE/DUB,
• Electronic / Electroacoustic / Computer music composer
( Softwares in order of preference and skill: SuperCollider // PureData // Max Msp )
• Live DSP on drums or other sound sources ( can easily be other instrumentalists, EVERY source )
• Sound design, sound recording, and music composition for films, theatre, videoclips, and every artistic context
• Audio editing and post production
( I use mainly // Reaper // Ableton Live! // Logic Pro X )
• Jazz drums training ( standards and free Jazz with Tiziano Tononi ), master in Electroacoustic music composition
• Field recordings
• Audio restoration

Interview with Leonardo Bonetti

  1. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  2. A: Drums track on recorded music / Additional drums/percussions tracks / Digital Sound Processing for artistic purposes on recorded material : could be ANY material such as instrumental tracks, voices, real-world sound sources, synthetic sounds, and could be ANY reason such as sound quality improvements or spectral manipulations and behavioral imprint adding (custom-made), in order to forge new original and unique sounds enabling your productions to distinct from the mass

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Live drum tracks for Italian independent producers; Real Time DSP on me drumming

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Digital for processing, analog for drumming!

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: When my research and customer's happiness awesomely meet

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: 1) A linux inside ultrapowerful laptop 2) A good interchangeable capsule microphone 3) An RME audio interface 4) Pair of sticks to use the whole island as a percussion ( for frictions I suppose branches would be available) 5) Solar panel and electronics to charge the laptop battery!

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: - piano classical studies - 13 years jazz drums studies alongside an open minded, active italian free jazz drummer ( Tiziano Tononi ) - master in Electroacoustic music composition @Milano Conservatory of Music

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: Follow your intuition, follow your ears

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: Electroacoustic // Computer music // Electronic // Jazz - Improvised // Noise // Classical

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: Real-time Digital Signal Processing on live (or even recorded) drums playing using state of the art digital sound synthesis softwares like SuperCollider is what I'm specialized in. Digital Signal Processing for timbral and behavioral expansion of every kind of recorded sound sources, such as recorded session tracks of all musical instruments, or odds weird sounds of sorts. Those type of stuff we do in experimental computer and electroacoustic music, often requiring punctual sound analysis before sound transformation

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: Creativity, originality, tailored sound and tailored soundS!

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: As an electroacoustic music composer, my workflow could freely start either from my acoustic instrument, the drums, either from a more abstract idea of shape or sound synthesis research, thus with the computer ( I use SuperCollider on top of other programs ). Then I work at the same time on the drums, so on the acoustical side ( or other sound sources, it depends ) and on the programming side, developing a step by step protocol which puts the two worlds in a constant hybridization relationship. If needed, I use some DAWs softwares to finalize the music, mainly for equalizations that are pointless to be carried out in those more complex programming environments, or when I need to check the spectral features of my sounds, or for realize cutting operations that's nonsense to perform out of the DAW, and of course for mixing multitracks projects. My aim is to understand, feel and tame sounds so I can access their structure and transform them at a deep digital level , keeping a conscious perspective about the techniques I'm using which never lack of a high rate of experimentation and action-reaction feedback workflow. I love to use my background in jazz drums training to actually play my drumset, controlling and synthesis, transformation and projection of sound. I don't look for a particular genre, but I'm interested in the physics of sound and listening, in psychoacoustic.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: Electroacoustic setup part : various quality condenser microphones, RME Fireface 802 audio interface, Sonor Force 3000 drumkit (still made in Germany --> great sound! - serial number can prove it! -), chinese Wuhan gongs, Meinl Timbales, maracas, Indian karthals, orchestral triangle, Turkish 18" China Classic Series, Tosco ( old italian manufacturing house ) 22" Ride, turkish frame drum (Bendir like)....and many many other percussions! Software part (in order of importance) SuperCollider, Reaper, Pure Data, Max Msp 8, SoundHack, Ableton Live! Suite 10.6, Logic Pro X

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: Horacio Vaggione; Trevor Wishart; Giorgio Klauer; Daniel Mayer; Yannis Kiriakides; Iannis Xenakis; Horatiu Radulescu; Gerard Grisey; Frank Zappa; Talking Heads; J Dilla; King Tubby; Jah Shaka; World music in general; Bob Moses (drummer); Albert Ayler; eRikm; George Brassens;
