Interview with YVNG NØIZE

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I did some ghostwriting for some big Italian pop stars, and I gained an MTV Award during the MTV DIgital Days in Torino in 2014.

  3. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  4. A: Most clients tend to ask how long it will take to produce a song or mix it. I always try to give them honest feedback, depending on the amount of work and the size of the project. I usually end up to surprise them as my ability to work quickly tends to anticipate potential deadlines.

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: The biggest misconception I've encountered is that some clients tend to underestimate the importance of having a good plan (besides recording a track) and sometimes think that the producer is the solution for everything, also talking about marketing and strategic releases planning. Every now and then I share tips with clients if they ask me, but the producer is not the equivalent of a music manager or a label, even if he can make a huge difference in your career.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: I generally ask clients what music inspires them, and what specific vibe inspired the particular track they want to work on. Also, I like to ask them what's behind the song, the meaning of the lyrics, and the message they want to transmit. This helps me empathize with the artist and create a better and more coherent piece of art.

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: My advice to a customer looking to hire someone like me is to be very clear about the style and general vibes you are looking for.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: I've been playing music for 25 years and I've been producing for over 10 years now. I have an extremely vivid musical sensibility, being raised by a pianist, I soon began to learn violin, guitar, piano, drums, vocals. I went to school for audio production in Italy and I did a bunch of masterclasses. I spent months in California (Bay area) to have more training and to deepen my songwriting skills. From there I began doing freelance work with artists and write lots of songs as a ghostwriter. I also lived in Sydney Australia for a few years where I produced, surrounded by motivating people. After coming back to Italy, I built a production studio from where I produce. Also, I often collaborate with another studio, called "Big Wave", located in my hometown, Livorno, where I work with local bands and artists.

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: My style is hard to define as I'm extremely versatile, however, I could say that all my productions are somehow rooted in a pop sensibility, blended with some slight dark and more interesting vibes, that make the product original and not plastic. The aim is to provoke emotions so that music will connect with your deepest part. Emotions, vibes, and feelings are everything.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: I like to reference a combination of tracks when I'm working, and I always ask for feedback from the artist, who is going to be my main stylistic guide. Especially at the beginning, it is important to define where we are going to land, sonically speaking. The artist plays a big role in the process and will be always be taken into maximum consideration.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: I usually work on radio-friendly Pop music and EDM, even if I also have a natural ability to arrange indie rock or alternative projects, being grown up playing in indie bands. Lastly, I get asked beats (hip-hop or trap music), and sometimes I work as a ghostwriter, producing soundtracks for films or jingles for commercials.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: I listen to the artist’s track first, and I immediately try to create a connection with his / her vibes, attitude, and emotions. Then I deconstruct the song and its structure, identifying the elements that I'm going to use as actors of a movie. Every sound has to impersonate a character and has to have a specific role in the big picture, always respecting the main character which is the voice. This clarity combined with my expertise and creativity will bring the song to the next level, quickly.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: I produce and mix in my acoustically isolated studio that I like to call "The Ice Cube" as it is super white, clean, and minimal, full of dope neon lights. I mainly do a lot of 'in the box' production and mixing, always making sure to blend everything with organic sounds that I frequently record using guitars, analog synths, and personal drum sounds, that add incredible texture and real natural vibes to my productions.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: I usually produce and mix songs, transforming the raw idea of an artist into a full track. So generally the artist sends me a draft (guitar/piano and vocal). Then I work on the arrangements asking for feedback from the artist, also using his/her reference track. When everything is ready, we cut the final vocal takes at my studio, or the client sends me a completed final vocal for the final mix (the very best takes, dry, not distorted). Also, I usually ghostwrite, creating toplines from scratch, arrangements, and soundtracks for my clients.

  25. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  26. A: My strongest skill is creating super catchy riffs and top lines in a metter of minutes, playing different instruments including vocals; it’s my natural ability and one of my strongest assets for sure. Everyone who knows me and have worked with me can confirm that.

  27. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  28. A: I bring my experience consolidated during 20 years of being a musician, a multi-instrumentalist, and a composer.

  29. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  30. A: A bunch of songs. I’m producing independent artists, making beats and working on some personal project for placements.

  31. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  32. A: Austin Leeds, for sure. I usually rely on him for mastering services and I think he’s one of the best out there.

  33. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  34. A: I love analog but I’m 100% digital. I work in the box as well.

  35. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  36. A: I want my clients to love the work, that’s why I’m always open for revisions.

  37. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  38. A: I love the fact that I get to know and work with talented artists from all over the world, doing the thing I love the most in life, music.

  39. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  40. A: Mac / Apollo / Adam speakers / Waves plugins / Guitar

  41. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  42. A: I’d love to work with Post Malone as I believe he’s one of the most versatile and talented artists on earth.

  43. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  44. A: Tough question, but if I had to name some of them, they would be Drake, OVO40, Diplo, Louis Bell, Josh Gudwin, Mike Dean, Luca Pretolesi, Ricky Reed, Warren Huart, and Scott Storch.
