Interview with Jazelle Kim
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I first listen to the beat and play around with melodies. Then move on to writing the Chorus which is very important and could make or break a song, so it needs the most attention. Then I move on to the verses which will set the tone for how I write the pre-chorus and bridge.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am my own artist outside of songwriting, so I’m working on my EP.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Beyonce. She has amazing vocal range and is the best performer of my generation. Writing a song for her would absolutely be an honor for any songwriter in general.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, RnB & Soul, Trap and Hip Hop Music
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Hit Potential. I have a good ear for what most hit songs have in common, so centering song around creativity, lyrics and also it’s hit potential is my skill.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Character. I make sure the song is a reflection of the artist singing it.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a bedroom studio setup in the comfort of my own home. It’s equips with everything I need to write and record demos.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Victoria Monet. I think she has a good ear for music and knows how to put songs well together.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mostly Pop. The pop scene is a very big one many people are trying to break into or find their place in.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Do I pay you once off? The answer is no. I am first paid to write the song and after it’s release I earn from songwriter royalties.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Make sure you have a clean idea of the topic you want the song to be about. For emotional and expressive song it helps to write a paragraph of how your feeling, so you I can get a deeper look into who your are as an artist.
